I wonder and ponder on why people wander, and then I discovered that I had to wonder because I have always been wandering too. Lost in thought, I decided to find a saviour, or good enough- saviours. Thank goodness I came across two known heads. Then I inquired, why celebrate Christmas? Of course, as expected, my curiosity failed to subside because I was given the known answer that had long outlived its usefulness. If a child could be given birth to today and given the ability to talk, he would of course have given me the same answer- to celebrate the birth of Christ and its tidings. I will like to take us on a short but concise journey to have the bigger picture of this.
Evangelist Ikemelu, the Assembly pastor of His Mercy. He was born a Catholic, started growing up in a Catholic church, but at the peak of his teenage years, he started attending Christ Embassy, and he really felt welcomed amidst them. It was no surprise that he ended up in a Pentecostal church, His Mercy. Debola, a secondary school student asked him, "why celebrate Christmas?" Then, he became lost in thought. Why was this so? Was it because he had mix background of Christianity or what? He was confused, he did not know if to explain to her as a Catholic that he used to be, or simply as a Christian. The Catholics start to celebrate Christmas four weeks before the decided date to really celebrate Christmas, while non-Anglicans do not celebrate theirs that way. Not to get her confused, he told her "study your Bible well". He would have given her selected texts to read, but he realized that he himself knew none. It was simply a convention he had been observing since he has been given birth to.
Pastor Akanji, the Senior Pastor of His Mercy is a die-hard devout Christian. He either classifies an individual a Christian or non-Christian, Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Sikhism, Islam, Hellenism and others do not exist in his world. He was simply a gullible fanatic. Debola, having discovered that Evangelist Ikemelu could not answer her question, she decided to ask the infamous Pastor Akanji. So he told her, its not like there is a particular scripture that justifies it, but it is that He just has to be revered." He gave her the analogy of the Greek god, Dionysus, the god of wine and revelry. He told her that though Dionysus has anthropomorphic features he was still revered with wine and dancing. Debola cuts in, are you now trying to compare Dionysus with Jesus?" "No" He replied. Debola thought it will be better for her to stick to Evangelist Ikemelu's advice, "I rather be a devout studier of the Holy Book. How do you manage to manage the congregation without investing unnecessarily and unneeded complications into their lives?" Will you shut up, and how old are you? I'm sure you are barely 15 and you are here trying to concert your stupidity into sensitivity." He barked unintentionally. "Go on, go ahead, go and study but it doesn't stop me from being the head." He calmly said.
Having heard from both authorities, she retired to her room, she came in without greeting anyone. She sat on her bad and pondered, what other things do people just do conventionally that they have no justification for?" She thought about how religiously they take all the so called leaders posit in hook, line and sinker. She also thought, This is only a survey of two of the well respected authority in church out of the millions that exist out there. No wonder people are lost in thought and wander in wonder. There is no one to show them the way out, so they decided to, at least, match up to those around them, so as not to look like a cast away. Another thought flows into her head, why do we have factions in churches?". She's really tired now; it will definitely be a topic for another day.
