We are hardwired to avoid threats that bring us discomfort. In many cases this is great! We fear the poisonous snake so we remain away from it's strike. We find discomfort in stabbing ourselves so we don't stab ourselves, etc...
...but this very same hardwiring is also a threat to our growth and fulfilment. This avoidance of discomfort, in many cases, leads us to not take on the important processes that growth requires. Growth and improvement take sacrifices (studying a new skill leads to more future income and a higher quality of life for us and our families, diet and exercise leads to healthier and more attractive bodies, etc, etc...) To get some of the better rewards and growth, it takes going through some minor discomforts.
We must not allow ourselves to become stagnated by a fear of discomfort. We must not allow ourselves to avoid growth due to our avoidance of responsibilities. We must not allow ourselves to self-sabotage with our natural hardwiring. We must not let our inherent systems that protect us from real threats, also hinder our progress.
