While you may not know it, there are actually bacteria capable of causing infections in the ice in your drink, and the only surefire way to kill it is with whiskey.
As a matter of fact, no other alcoholic drink, be it vodka, champagne, beer, rum or any other other spirit or mixer can destroy such bacteria that are capable of causing infections when you drink them. Just whiskey.
A study recently published in the medical journal Springer which examined the types of bacteria that can survive in ice found out that there are up to 31 species of bacteria that can be found in bar ice.
Among the bacteria that was discovered common in ice includes the infectious Pseudomonas which can cause skin and lung infections, Staphylococcus (responsible for Staph infections), Bacillus (guilty for food poisoning symptoms) and Acinetobacter (can cause pneumonia and meningitis).
With that in mind, the researchers tested just how resilient the bacteria is by putting infected ice in common drinks. Freezing temperatures didn’t kill them. Vodka didn’t kill any of them either.
However, Coca-Cola killed Bacillus and Pseudomonas, and tonic killed all but Acinetobacter. Whiskey, however, killed all the infectious bacteria that was isolated.
The title of the study is, “Presence of pathogenic bacteria in ice cubes and evaluation of their survival in different systems,” and reading through the material is capable of turning you off Vodka Martinis, especially if they happen to be your favourite.
Granted, drinking the bacteria won’t make you sick in the vast majority of cases. The fact that you have been consuming these particular set of drinks your entire cocktail drinking life doesnt mean you will get sick now. But why not choose to live life on the safe side by going for whiskey, especially when the safe side tastes so good?
