The study of behavior suggests that most of the habits we have are completely automated. From their vast research into human behaviors they have learned that most of what we do every day is completely routine or automated. If your habits are not helping you achieve your goals then behavior therapy shows you how to change your environment to fulfill your goals. Habits, according to this discipline, are the things you automatically do when you perform a certain set of activities. For example you may use the same set of eating habits every day. If you want to lose weight, and don't want to change your eating habits, all you have to do is change the place you eat every day.
Habits are generally the same set of activities performed over again, but with different sets of visual cues. You observe the same set of behaviors being exhibited repeatedly so you begin to associate them with pleasant experiences. As an example, if you eat out at a fast food restaurant on your way to work, you will have a difficult time avoiding the advertisements and sights that promote unhealthy food and drive you to eat more. However, if you ate at home and had your family dinner there, you would be less likely to give in to these habits.
Habits can be unlearned. The ability to change your environment is dependent upon your strength of willpower. This is where the importance of having new friends is so important. With a group of people who can help you overcome your bad habits, you will find it much easier to stay on track with your new behavior patterns. This helps you develop the willpower necessary to change your environment successfully.
One of the most common habits that people have is compulsive eating. It is this habit that we are going to talk about today. People are under the belief that if they tell themselves they are going to stop eating bad foods, that eventually it will happen. The problem with this belief is that by telling yourself that it will happen, you are actually reinforcing the behavior by reaffirming that it is a good thing to continue.
This is just one way that you can systematically and drastically change your environment. Another way is to actually schedule one day a week to focus on a specific behavior or habit that you would like to change. For example, if you habitually skip meals, you could spend one day focusing on eating a light meal that will help to curb your appetite. On the other hand, if you are late to work, you could focus on getting out of bed a little earlier so that you can arrive on time and also to get the brain going and being able to concentrate on work. Both of these ideas can be used to help you shift your environment so that you will be more successful.
Now let's take a look at fogginess. When you are thinking about this, what is the first thing that comes to mind? It is probably either thoughts of eating something to curb your appetite, watching tv, or reading a book. There is one very good reason for this and that is because this is one of the easiest things to do when you have a lot of people living in one small space. It does not take a lot of space to place a couch and a few chairs around a television set, a computer, and a bookshelf, and even a magazine rack. If you are thinking about trying this and have a small apartment, this can be one way to dramatically change your environment.
What I want to do now is talk about one thing that we can do that will make this really simple for anyone. These three ways are great for anyone who wants to completely change their environment. The first thing you can do is just observe the way you are doing these three things, see how they are contributing to your binge eating, overeating, or binging behaviors. This is a great way to observe what you are doing, and if you notice any patterns, you might want to incorporate a different routine or change your habits.
The second thing is to change your environment; now this might sound more difficult than it is. You want to do this one thing every day instead of every other day. What you can do is to create a new environment, one that doesn't include any of the three things that are currently happening. You can get rid of the TV and the magazines, and maybe set aside a few minutes every day to sit down and meditate or pray.
