Growing Older Or Getting Older?

in life •  2 years ago

Growing Older is one of the most difficult stages of life, but it doesn't have to be dreaded. We have the power to choose what happens to us as we age. If we're willing to accept and change our perception of age, we can age joyfully. But there are some issues to consider, including: Physical and mental decline, Perceptions about aging, and Stress levels.

Healthy aging
Healthy aging is a process that involves developing healthy habits and staying active. This is crucial because it helps to prevent disease and improve quality of life. Other things to keep in mind when aging are avoiding alcohol and smoking, getting enough sleep, and proactively managing your health care. A key part of healthy aging is physical activity, which can be safely incorporated into everyday life.

Perceptions of aging
According to research, having a better self-perception of aging is linked to better health. Researchers at Oregon State University found that the more positive one's views of ageing, the more resilient older adults were to the physical effects of stress. Similarly, individuals with a negative self-perception of ageing were less likely to experience the physical effects of stress.

Physical and mental declines
As we get older, our minds tend to slow down and we become less active. This is a normal part of aging and is expected. But if these changes are marked or persist for a long period of time, it could indicate cognitive decline. Fortunately, there are ways to monitor cognitive decline. Regular assessments of your thinking and memory can help you spot changes. Talk to your doctor if you're concerned about any problems.

Stress levels
While the human body is incredibly resilient, stress-related problems can lead to accelerated aging and deterioration of the immune system. As we age, our immune system becomes less capable of dealing with stress and can eventually lead to early death. Most of these problems are the result of hormonal imbalances, and the hormone cortisol plays a huge role. Chronically elevated levels of cortisol can lead to aging, increased insulin resistance, and excess belly fat.

Meaningful activities
Researchers have found that engaging in meaningful activities can help people feel good about their lives as they age. These activities help people stay physically active and maintain their sense of purpose. They also reduce depression and improve health.

Self-esteem
Insecurities of youth give way to increased self-esteem as one grows older. The more positive experiences people have in their lives, the better their self-esteem. Self-control and altruism also boost one's self-esteem.
