Do You Deserve It? - Daily Meditation #28

in life •  7 years ago

Self-awareness is like an enema when you've crammed a bunch of Pop Rocks in your ass: you need it. Without self-awareness, you will think you're effective when you're not, talented when you are lacking, and deserving when you aren't (Also, you may fail to critique your own ideas, and end up with half a box of Pop Rocks in your ass).

One of the most crucial element of self-awareness is knowing if you deserve to achieve your goals. For example, I would like to be a writer, but I clearly need to work on my similes and metaphors. I'm skeptical that the whole Pop Rocks/ass/enema-level wordplay will cut it in the long run. Simply put, I haven't put in enough time to be deserving of a writing career.

Do you deserve a better financial situation? A healthier body? More free time? What are you doing to increase your chances of obtaining those things? You may work hard and get none of those benefits, but you'd at least be deserving of them. Without the hard work, you won't get them, and you can't complain. Because you didn't deserve it.

Be brutally honest with yourself. Try to see your efforts as an outside observer. What would others say about your work ethic and commitment? Don't berate yourself. Give yourself compassionate and constructive criticism. Ask if you really deserve what you are chasing.

And on that note, I will slink away to think up something better than an ass full of Pop Rocks to inspire you with tomorrow.

Thanks to you I will now never look at pop rocks the same way hahaha. It will probably also remind me of this post and that I should stop looking at pop rocks and go do something constructive.

Lol... Today was a WEIRD post!

My girlfriend wanted to get going this morning, so it was essentially a freewrite. I just shot from the hip and hoped for the best.

I am not sure other people liked it...but it made me chuckle. The most ridiculous things come out of us when we are forced to create.

Well, it ain't Shakespeare, but your pop-rocks/enema metaphor certainly did a job. And made me snarf.

Self-awareness is, IMO, the mother of all feckers (the word "feck" is Ireland's gift to the World!). The big problem with it, like Rumsfeld's unknown unknowns, is that if you haven't got it, you don't know you haven't got it!

Very true. How do you show someone that they aren't self-aware when they are currently not self-aware? Such a hard lesson to learn.

I really don't think you can, Chris. Know thyself, and let other people get there in their own time. I know that some never will.

I am a constant work in progress and that ebbs and flows!

Good stuff as always, @chrismccron. I was reminded by your article of the Dunning-Kruger Effect. The tl;dr of which is: the less someone knows the more confident they are in the knowledge. For example, someone who isn't self-critical and therefore is unaware of their flaws will suffer from inflated self-confidence. The old adage "empty vessels make the most noise" comes to mind. With that said, I should probably shut up.

I am well-aware of the Dunning-Kruger Effect! I am sure that I have been part of that effect a few times ;) I studied it a bit in school. If you aren't being continually humbled by life, you are probably in the midst of the Dunning-Kruger Effect.

I'd like to hear what you have to say about:
How hard do you have to work for it? or some people might question "but I'm already working but it's still not coming"
