IMHO, this lack of civility in every day discourse comes from the culture of political correctness which has been cultivated for decades. Somewhere along the line it became socially unacceptable to become "offended" by someone else and being "offended" by someone else became equivalent to being harmed by them. In order to return to civil discourse we must get over this notion that someone has a right to "not be offended" and get rid of this political correctness which has led to suppression of people's true thoughts and feelings; which is why when something like Trump being elected happens everyone acts so shocked. We must restore a society that believed that "sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me," before we can expect any return of civility in discourse. We must restore the notion that it is OK to offend and be offended.
