To prevent the dorsal surface from being covered by algae or other particles that might decrease gas exchange, the sea star uses tiny appendices, called pedicellariae, which are 3 to 4 times thinner than podia. Aside from keeping the body wall clean, pedicellariae are sometimes used to capture food particles.
