I guess not. Most people do not prepare for their funeral, especially the young, healthy ones. It is too depressing to even think about the subject. Let alone, prepare for it. Most will only do it, when they are informed by the doctors, they are told of the expected expiry date. but usually these period, you will not have mood to do it anymore.
But is it good to be prepared for it? You can never know, when you will be called home. Accidents are happening everyday, every where. Are you sure, you can wake up tomorrow morning? Let me tell you a personal experience.
One night when I was sleeping, I was suddenly awake by a hard squeeze on my heart. I literally can feel where is the exact position of my heart. It was a bad experience, very similar to a muscle cramp, but this time it is on the heart. Our heart is also muscles. Therefore it is possible to have cramps too. Scary. Am I having a heart attack? I try to relax, and my heart went back to normal. I dare not tell anyone about this experience. i take things more relaxed and take care of my health more diligently.
Many of us will said, "Die, die lah (singlish) , what is there to prepare?".
Of course, there are many stuff to prepare. Particularly, preparing for the sake of your love ones. Prepare them, to help them cope with the lost of you. Prepare them, to know what to do when you are gone. Here are some guides that I have draft out:
What will your funeral be like?
What type of rituals is your preference?
What songs do you like to be sang at your funeral, useful if you are a Christian?
How do you want your body to be handled - cremation (if your culture allows it) or burial. Land, sea or garden?
How much do you, and how can your love one get it?
In this cyber world, where do you store all your passwords to access all your cyber accounts (facebook, linkedin, steemit, google plus, email?
The first few are just some material stuff. It will not make much differences if it is done against your will. However, what about these questions:
What do you want to say to your love ones, your colleagues, your friends, when you are saying for one last time?
How do you like to comfort them, encourage them, especially you love ones, when you are gone?
Such an exercise, a very deeply thought, may requires many hours to think thru. And some may even take days. But i personally think that it is essential and very helpful for our loves one. If you love them, help them to cope with the lost of you. Try to do something is better than nothing.
You can always add, change it at different stage of life (Single, Married, Parent-hood, Retirees etc). It is also good to have it written out on a book, so that it will not be accidentally erased. And remember to leave a date on it, for easier reference and changes. You do not need to be a writer to write to your loved ones. They will understand your lingo, your grammer, your style. More importantly is write it with your love, write it with your feelings, even write it with your tears.
Interesting reading? Let me know, what are your thoughts on this subject? Do you have any other pointers to add? Please help by putting it on the comment. I will re-compile them to make the list more comprehensive.
Like to know what I have written for my funeral? I will put it up in a separate article, look out for it.
