Say Hello to the Happiest Animal in the World - How Photographing Them Changed My Life - Part 1

in life •  8 years ago

I snapped photos of these quokkas smiling and the internet went crazy.

Here is what the internet was designed for. Cute animals to excite your happiness.

I'll explain my story after these photos.

Happy emotions come running into your head.

That's the aim of photography, to pull an emotional string to compel people.

Of course, animals are a great subject matter. Especially if they're adorable. But I had stumbled on something different, un-tapped quokka knowledge. There was very little quokka content on the internet in 2013 and unbeknownst to me, I opened up the flood gates.

Firstly, what in the world are these little animals?

Quokkas are small little marsupials found on Rottnest Island in Western Australia. Unfortunately there are only around 12,000 left in the world meaning they're registered as vulnerable species.

Think of them about the size of a cat, with the body structure of a kangaroo with the face of smiling bear. Crazy cool.

Being nocturnal, they love the night. It's the best time to come out and look for food. But you'll see them during the day chilling out under the shade of bushes, trees and shelters.

If your photography adds value and helps people you're on the right track.

I took the photos for fun, uploaded some and the emails started rolling in. What company could possibly want these photos? Well it turns out they are very valuable to Tourism Australia. Showcasing an adorable animal exclusive to Australia could drive people to Australia. That's the tourism board's main job, get people to travel to Australia.

The internet has your photos now, anything can happen

The images were featured by Tourism Australia and then reposted over countless Instagram accounts. Distractify and BoredPanda then featured my quokka selfies. People were over joyed to find out such an animal even existed. More and more people started sharing the photos across social.

It was a tidal wave of likes and comments

People were messaging me to say how much joy quokkas bring them. How it made their day and put a smile on their face. Now that's cool, I'm very grateful to know that it has brought joy to peoples lives.

Although it got to a point where I had to turn off push notifications.

I started uploading even more quokka photos to continue spreading smiles.

Buzzfeed interviewed me about my experience in Western Australia.

Of course highlighting quokkas.

Thanks to Joey Kavanagh for spotting this one.

Even Japanese TV shows.

I have no idea what they're saying.

I was astonished at the effect which these photos where having on the world.

People now associate me with quokkas. I have become this animal guy by uploading a few high quality images and the rest is history. The internet made the decision for me. It was obvious, I had to go back to hangout with the quokkas to capture even more content.

I think cute animal photos take us back to a more innocent part of us and a more innocent time, which our soul craves, so that is why the photos are so popular. So very cute!!!

Very well said, I never thought about it that way.

I remember watching your TED video, and was truly inspired by the path that you have in your life.

It is really important that people like you exists in the world that is full of negativity and frustration.

I adore your photos, they are very professional and beautiful. Those quite little animals are very similar to those that my granddad had a few years ago. They are really funny and can boost your mood immediately.

Besides your hair is cool too. It is perfect for making photos with animals that have curly hair. I believe what you do in your life is really motivating for others. So keep it up, and I hope we'll meet one day.

Glad to have inspired you. I really try with my photos. High quality all the way. Steemit will help me to keep creating.

That TED talk was the most nerve wracking thing I've ever done. Skydiving was easier. Probably because it was being filmed with a story put together in three weeks.

Actually the talk was by accident. I'll write a story about it, as I had originally emailed them to volunteer at the event.

Do, please! It was a great TED Talk and I would love to hear it from your point of view!

Yeah, the quality is really amazing. Besides what kind of camera are you using to make them so awesome?

About TED, I believe that it is a scary thing. I mean it is exciting but also very challenging because to speak on public is not an easy task to accomplish. But you've done it great, I haven't noticed that you were nervous at all. So I guess you've done your part really great.

Wow! These are so cute animals!
There will be a part 2? Followed you!

Sure will :) hold onto your hat

Thanks for sharing your story behind the pictures. A fascinating journey indeed!

Thanks man. :)

Photogenic little creatures, aren't they?

Love, love the pictures and a new animal for me to learn about. thank you!

Wait till you see them in person

Great pictures! Thanks for sharing them with us... It is rare to see happy wild animals so at ease with fotographers. Hope your work will help this species.

They're very curious of people which is why they come up close. Yes, more of the story to come.

This is awesome! And my introduction to this adorable animal!

I can't believe I never heard of them before. I lso appreciate the joy you can bring to others through your photographs. What a great feeling it must be to know you bring smiles to people's faces.

Animal stories, pictures, and videos are among my favorite things to view and share via social media because there is something so innately uplifting and entertaining to watch animals just do their thing, interact with one another or humans. (Of course it does depend on content, as stories depicting animal abuse and what not are crushing) But thank you for today's mini mental vacation :)

I wish there were trending tags for animals, pets, dogs, etc. I'd be checking them often! In the meantime I started sharing about my dog Marvin, with the hope of bringing some smiles to others. https://steemit.com/life/@cehuneke/meet-marvin-the-maltipoo-a-formidable-5-3-pound-athlete

This trick, thanks for a post

hahaha this such a sweet and funny post. Perfect and beautiful. Thank you :)

It must be one of the best job to do, when you get so close to the nature.
Amazing shoots, and a nice animal.

It sure is, but a passion project that I did for fun. However there was some image licensing that has helped me along the way. More to come! :)

Nice, i see ;)
I be waiting :-)

That is unreal, a cat-bear-roo! It is just unbelievable you can get pictures like that. Just completly amazing.

Thanks! It took about a week on the island to capture some quality stuff.

Cool as always daxon!

Wow, so cute, really great photos!

They are so cute. I can't resist!

These animals are definately the cutest animal to come out of Australia - I just hope all of mankind in its rush to now take selfies with them dont ruin their habitat etc as they seem very unafraid of people. - just leave Daxon to be their selfie promoter..

That is adorable.

Hey, I seen you somewhere in the web before. Cool to have you now on Steemit. Please post more of your photos.
How about posting a behind the scenes story? A making of from your shoots. How do get the trust of the animals?

Curiosas tus fotos

ooh... so cute, cute and handsome.
No, you are the handsome one.
