What Did You Want To Be When You Grew Up?

in life •  7 years ago

I know some families where sophomores in high school are already decided on what they want to pursue as a career - like, realistic things like a dental hygienist or accountant.

I can't fathom that. When I was in high school my thoughts were basically about video games and girls, with a smattering of pot smoking and rock music.

Though come to think of it, I did have career goals. Here are the main professions I considered as a high schooler:

PROFESSIONAL SKATEBOARDER

I was pretty sure this was going to happen, despite the fact that I was never able to land a kickflip. I did, however, excel at sticker placement on my board.

FBI AGENT

I watched Twin Peaks, and it seemed like eating at small diners and solving crimes would be awesome. I still kind of fantasize about working for the CIA, honestly.

KUNG FU MASTER

I took martial arts for about 4 years after I saw The Matrix, but I started to realize it might not be a good fit after my sensei yelled at me and made me do like 100 extra pushups on my greenbelt test because I had dyed my hair bright red.

SCREENWRITER/DIRECTOR

I heard that Quintin Tarantino just watched movies for 12 hours a day, and that seemed like the life for me.

HACKER

Huh, yeah, it seems like all my ideas were from TV shows or movies (Hackers). I didn't even really know what a hacker was. I still kinda don't. But it seemed rad.

PHYSICIST

I took this class about quantum physics and thought it was totally awesome. Somehow the shine wore off. I still don't understand if there is any evidence for Schrodinger's Cat theory or if he just made it up, possibly while high.

Well I think that's about it. And now I'm a software developer working on a boring legacy app and fantasizing about quitting and doing crypto stuff full time.

Just wish I have a few million dollars.. then a i could smoke pot all day, take martial arts and dye my hair back from grey.

The dream is real!

(You might appreciate this, I wanted to be a rebbe but one time I subbed for a 7th grade rebbe all morning and the kids tore me apart. One of them made fun of me for how I pronounced "Tosfos" - it's 'TOISFIS,' he said - and that was that for me.)

haha nice! It’s not Torah Techa! It’s Sora Secha. Luckily I married a sephardi :)

Were you subbing for an English class (math/history/english etc.,) or was it Torah?

Yeah it was the Torah part of the day

Surprising. Now I feel I shouldn't have asked... Hopefully it was just a rowdy day for them.

I think 7th grade is a hard age and substitute teachers are always a bit of a hard situation. But it was clear teaching was not for me.

I was less than cooperative at that age too. Didn't even need it to be a sub!

You don't have to be a millionaire to smoke Pot all day!!!

You certainly do not :)

😂😂

DO NOT OPEN THE BOX if you don't understand Schrodinger's cat! It may be - disturbing...

Unless you can kung fu it open and be prepared!

I'm 21, a senior in college, and I am still asking myself this very question.

I'm 68, a senior, and I'm also still asking myself this very question!

What are you studying?

Finance!

I had very vague thoughts about being a veterinarian. But I didn't make any efforts to make it happen. There was no one to encourage me (to anything at all). I wanted to get out of school asap.
For almost a decade I did boring low-paid jobs. Then I became an artist and I'm happy as a pig in shit :) As a kid I never considered this as a serious career.

What kind of art?

I call it neo-surrealism. They are like surrealistic landscapes, but not Dali-like. I just posted one of my paintings for the colorchallenge :) You can see it here.

Wow I wanted to be a vet as well but stopped in my tracks for completely different reasons

It seemed like a kind of serious but doable profession that everybody would agree.
I even participated to a visit-day for high-schoolers, but I almost fainted after the first cut in a cat's belly :D

Yeah i think that pretty much would have done it for me. To this day I feel really bad about killing mice🤔🤔🤔

When I was 4-5 I had a close relationship with dogs. I swore I would become the worlds greatest vet. Then I grew up and found that I was very confortable in my own bleeding and suffering. Yet couldn't stomach it in animals or other people. Needless to say it killed my dream job around the age of 13. I am still doing amazing as an entrepreneur, and have also been blessed with a couple 6 figure careers😁😁😁

I quit nursing school when I realized I was going to be around death that and my grades were bad too.

Not all nurses have to deal with death tho

No - but the classes I had left did deal with death, and I wasn't ready. It's not like you can just skip the classes you don't like.

Oh yeah. I couldn't handle that either, I get lightheaded just from medical discussions.

Yeah death is a no fly zone for me. I dont even want to attend my own funeral🤔

Hahahahaja. I try to change careers every 3 years. I've been here for one day and my new "wanna be when I grow up" is a crypto-millionaire 🤑🤑

I wanted to be...different. Set your bars low enough and you will succeed!

This is oddly a refreshing perspective

I am a student
Now i read in inter 1st year
I have a Dream
I want to be a successful steemian.

I can see from the comments that I can say;

We need a Kung-Fu-Rebbe!

Sure beats my wanting to be a dentist when I was only 12! lolz!
(I'm glad that desire died too!)
