Calculus Derivative and Buddhism

in life •  8 years ago

I sent the below message to my friend Elise, who is a Math PHD student. I will share with you what I asked of her. Please keep in mind, this was a friendly message to a friend, and not professional writing. Please refer to the image below for the example.

my metaphor in regards to the calculus derivative and even the concept of integration looks at Buddhism and possibly the summation of "nothing" to everything possible

Perfection is this concept that never changes, no matter what. If it changes then it is not perfect. Because we know that everything in this world/plain is susceptible to the concept of change, it cannot be perfect. Therefore, perfection cannot exist. The concept of 0 is the idea of non-existence. Enlightenment is this aspect of perfect wisdom or a level of where there is no change in the mind per say

When looking at the calculus derivative, if you keep on deriving, things get more and more "simple." However, if you keep on deriving you will eventually reach "nothing" or 0. If you keep on deriving 0, your result is still 0. So the aspect of obtaining/attaining enlightenment is my metaphor for the calculus derivative. deriving to such an extent where nothing changes. 0 will remain 0
in the example above, i want to define d/dx as your concept of change over time. x being your target/concept, n being the dimension in lies in, C part/piece of your target/concept. h the height or what your concept will approach, with 0 being the concept of perfection. As the limit of h tends toward 0, the ability to reach perfection/enlightenment tends towards this direction.
my question is the mathematical component so my metaphor is sound, regards the k. what does k stand for and how does k=0 and then k=1?

i do understand that n is integer counter, but if we want to talk about the deconstruction of dimensions (the mind, physical self. and the what not, what not being the concept of quantum entanglement but that's a different story) I will use n in that sense
where it is the dimension it lies in.

any constant being only part of the equation as when you integrate you get any constant from 0. this escape from perfection allows for imperfection (anything that exists or the constant C, piece of the concept/target, where your overall equation is the entire concept/target)

once i understand what k stands for and how it suddenly becomes k=0 to k=1, i can understand the metaphor more clearly and then enable this concept in my second novel. Thanks again for helping dear! if you have any questions or any clarifications, please let me know. I can understand how this is kinda odd, which is why i wanted to speak to you on the phone, but realized it would have been difficult without speaking to you in real life lololol

the reason i am connecting this to buddhism is based on this sutra, in which i would like you to look at
http://path.homestead.com/heartsutra.html
Heart Sutra: Form is Emptiness, Emptiness is Form

The Heart Sutra as uttered by Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara
path.homestead.com
if anything, i am focusing on these lines:

O Sariputra, Form does not differ from Emptiness
And Emptiness does not differ from Form.
Form is Emptiness and Emptiness is Form.
The same is true for Feelings,
Perceptions, Volitions and Consciousness.

Sariputra, the characteristics of the
Emptiness of all Dharmas are
Non-Arising, Non-Ceasing, Non-Defiled,
Non-Pure, Non-Increasing, Non-Decreasing.

Therefore, in the Emptiness there are no Forms,
No Feelings, Perceptions, Volitions or Consciousness
No Eye, Ear, Nose, Tongue, Body or Mind;
No Form, Sound, Smell, Taste, Touch or Mind Object;
No Realm of the Eye,
Until we come to no realm of Consciousness.
No Ignorance and also no ending of Ignorance,
Until we come to no Old Age and Death and
No ending of Old Age and Death.
Also, there is no Truth of Suffering,
Of the Cause of Suffering,
Of the Cessation of Suffering, Nor of the Path

There is no Wisdom, and there is no Attainment whatsoever
Because there is nothing to be attained,
The Bodhisattva relying on Prajna Paramita has
No obstruction in his mind
also, if you'd like, you can look at the concept of Sanyata which is Emptiness or what i would like to equate to the concept of 0
also, within the Diamond sutra this concept is stated:
As far as ‘all dharmas’ are concerned, Subhuti, all of them are dharma-less. That is why they are called ‘all dharmas.’
Those so-called ‘streams of thought,’ Subhuti, have been preached by the Tathagata as streamless. That is why they are called ‘streams of thought.’
‘All beings,’ Subhuti, have been preached by the Tathagata as beingless. That is why they are called ‘all beings.’
“And whenever the Tathagata preaches about a ‘trigalactic megagalactic world-system,’ that has been preached by the Tathagata as systemless. That is why it is called ‘a trigalactic megagalactic world-system.’

i just got that bit from wiki. Thanks sooooooooo much again dear! a reminder that the question is how does k=0 become k=1 lolololol

in some sense the usage of the derivation allows for this concept of perfection to exist after so many "lifetimes" or usages of the derivative. I guess you can use n as your lifetime count instead of dimensions.

That was very much informally shooting from the hip, but I like the direction of thought - having an MS in Engineering and a candidate MA in Buddhist Studies, how would I not?! :)
