Anonymity in the age of crypto robberies.

When you fire the bank in this 'unbank the banked' revolution, security becomes your responsibility. If you look at the statistics below. My account becomes a high payout robbery target just for the payout. When you include that I am an individual, who is not at secure as a bank or a business. It gets scary. Its even a little scary for me to talk about as Drpuffnstuff on here with you all.

Right now, my Steemit account is worth $17,000. That's about 4 banks worth of robbing. My account value is small compared to some. At what point do I hire some security, what is the crypto version of a bank vault? The closest thing I have found to a crypto bank vault is to power up Steem into Steem Power.

There are two reasons why I really like it. One is that it cannot all be taken at once, the powering down aspect though not perfect when you need money quick. Is a great layer of security for those times you never want to happen. When you get hacked or robbed. Samstonehill had his account hacked, they did get a good portion of money from him through powering down, with the help of Steemit he was able to recover his hacked account. The second thing I really like is that I am allowed to remain somewhat anonymous. My real name and this name are not so well connected. I have told a handful of people and shown them my account, mostly people I was trying to get posting on Steemit. The majority of people cannot connect this account with my real name though. For those two reasons, me getting robbed for my Steemit account is not ever really on my mind. Finding Drpuffnstuff in the streets is not so easy.

This anonymity causes many bad things to happen as well. Much of the abuse, plagiarism, and reward pool rape on Steem could be cut back if there was a real life name connected to the account. Plagiarize with your real life name attached, and you face repercussions. Upvote your alt accounts at the 11th hour and it could be known that you are giving yourself money at the last moment. Some accountability would be nice, since people cant take personal accountability it seems. Will it come to pass that this is why we can't have nice things like anonymity?

What are the best ways to secure and keep your crypto safe? If my largest layer of security is the anonymity, that separation of Drpuffnstuff and me I am able to have. What do I do when the bad people being themselves get my anonymity taken away? I would like to go to Facebook and start a campaign trying to on-board all my friends. I don't want all my friends to know I have $17,000 worth of imaginary (yet very real) social media money. That to me is sacrificing too much security. I'm an introvert, I don't post on Facebook where all my friends are that often. Drpuffnstuff is much more extroverted then me, he is willing to host challenges and share his thoughts with everyone. More than likely once Drpuffnstuff gets connected to the introverted me in real life. Drpuffnstuff will just be a lurker like me, who only thrives in small circles.

All of these thoughts spawn from two recent bits of news.. This post by @fyrestikken about what happens when your anonymous account needs to get attached to a real life identity. The other is from the @ned/@dan war. @dan's proposed fixes involved Identity validation, vote canceling, dispute resolution, bonded behavior, n2 reward curve.

I want to know what is meant by identity validation and bonded behavior..? Does this require giving up the security of anonymity? Could our entire balance be hidden like Fyrestikken has suggested if our anonymity is taken away.

Woot woot,

I just powered up about 600 Steem.. yay! LOCKED IN

This is a tricky subject for me, and it's probably because instead of being one issue, it really ought to be two.

Right now, we're used to seeing basically everything someone does, including how much holdings they have and the approximate value of it.

This is awesome in a society where no one really cares.

Unfortunately, even on Steemit, we don't live in that society.

On the other hand, I like to know who I'm dealing with when I talk to people, even though I understand fully the need for anonymity (I actually considered an alias for my own account) especially when it's tied to a STEEM account.

Maybe the Steemit social media/blogging account just needs to be separate from the wallet. We can see what people are doing, we just can't see it in terms of fiat.

I don't know. It's a tough call. If it came down to it, I'd rather know who I was speaking with than track every last detail of their Steemit activities. But I'd still like to have both.

However, I would hate for you @drpuffnstuff, to revert back to your only introverted self. I live that every day. But talking to you here via the written word is different than speaking to you face-to-face, or being part of a group discussion all in one room.

At least, it is for me. :)

I agree with you man, although peudo-identity causes many case of core abuse, plagiarism but it also provides a certain level of protection from these hackers, even I use a puedo-name on steemit.

Although there are few of my friends who know about my steemit identity, but they will never hack my account (not because of there honesty, but there aren't capable enough for that 😜), for others I'm not worried - **1. They don't know my identity, 2. I don't have much money, they will just waste there time... 😂... **

Well, on serious note I do believe that peudo-identity provides a certain level of security in avoiding being a victim of cyber crime.

Love your post, keep the good work

@casualwriter

Yeah and it's not just getting the account stolen that we have to worry about. I was trying to get my wife to use steemit again.

She registered last year but never posted anything. For the life of us we couldn't retrieve/recall the password lol.

It’s a really tough debate with no right answer, I’ve written extensively on why I choose to stay anonymous, despite really wanting to show myself sometimes. The main reasons are to avoid self censorship, being bottled into an identity, and an aversion to fame and the tendency of people to focus on the messenger rather than the message...though security is also a good reason. I think transparency should be an ideal that we strive for but which is not forced, especially on individuals as I think the powerful should offer their full transparency first.

I think one of the key aspects of crypto is privacy.

You take away privacy and most of its users will probably drop crypto...

I hope the identity validation is just like our Coins.ph (it is only Coins.ph who knows our identity not the public). We cannot cash out if we do not take SELFIE holding government ID from the Coins.ph mobile app or desktop web (selfie-verification) as required by Philippine Central Bank. I have no problem with that. I verified my account (phone, email, selfie and address) so I could cash out up to PHP400,000 DAILY. Maybe Steem can do the same thru BlockTrades or SteemConnect. Only Steemians who complete BlockTrades/SteemConnect verifications can SELL Steem and SBD to control abuse. As long as transferring Steem/SBD from unverified account to the verified one is allowed, we will be fine. I have a friend who cannot verify account yet so she transfer Bitcoin to my account and I cash it out for her. But the problem here Steem wallet history is public people would know if we transfer to our another account. If i.e. Steemit/BlockTrades allow us to verify multiple accounts using the same documents or BlockTrades allow us to transfer Steem/SBD from anonymous acct to the verified one then that's fine for me so our wallet will only show transfer to blocktrades not to our other account.

What I really do not like here is posting #introduceyourself with selfie like many Steemians do. Glad it is not mandatory. If I have more money I'd buy separate anonymous account too for security purposes. :)

Important food for thought....

Balance Should be hidden and Sp too :)

Thanks for sharing this awareness spreading post, and yes in my opinion also the safest thing is powering up Steem into Steem Power because the Steem Power cannot be withdrawn at one go and this feature makes it really unique and safe. If you ask my personal opinion the wallet section should be accessible by only the owner of the account because complete disclosure of holdings is not an ideal idea in my opinion.

Stay Blessed.

You may buy a nano ledger or cold Wallet by using a desktop pc or notebook

Good post sir
