The Approaching Storm

in life •  7 years ago

For a number of years I was able to enjoy half of my time in Cherkassy, Ukraine (90 days there, 90 days in Canada and so on). It is one of those things that I could do because there was no reason for me to be anyplace in particular. To be honest I "lived" in Ukraine and I returned to Canada. While I was there everyday was an adventure.

On this particular day Ira, Sasha and I went for a walk to the beach and made our way back when a horrendous rainstorm broke out. This is about 5 minutes before the deluge and it was the first time I had ever seen water turn black (reflecting the clouds overhead).

That is my dream way to live. Half a year here, half a year there -- I think I'd be chasing spring and summer :) That sky looks very moody. Did you get caught int he rain?

Hi @onethousandwords. Indeed I did. While this video was captured by someone a couple years later, I think that they get one of these storms almost every year. In minutes the rain came down so quickly we had to slosh our way back.

A number of years ago, I would have asked you what you were you would want to be in 10 years. Travel for its own sake can end in long term disappointment. While the pyramids (which I haven't seen) might be of interest they would just represent a few moments of memory. I have found that it doesn't matter where I am or what I see ... the important things are the people I am with.

I see that you are building up a profitable following. I hope you can induce your friends and special people to follow lead and perhaps all of you can share the world together.

Wow that is a crazy amount of rain. Travel definitely expands humanity I think. Thanks for the feedback. I really like this platform. It has more 'meat on the bones' than general social media.

I've found that if you travel as a tourist you can take a bus tour, which quickly shows you the major sights but then spend the rest of your time devoted to visiting those particular sights that you were interested in. If one of your dreams is to visit Rome, there is too much to see adequately on a simple tour. I found I could only stand so many churches to visit. One of the best days that I had on a bus tour was while I was in Sorrento and the tour was going to Pompeii and around Napoli (while I was a teenager). I wanted to hit the bank first so the rest of the group went on ahead of me. I spent the rest of the day chasing them. At one point I was on a bus that was going the opposite way so I got off and hung out talking with a bunch of Neapolitans in a barbershop until it returned going back to the depot. To be honest, I have ventured on my own and have gotten lost almost every where I have visited.
I tend to find very interesting and friendly people everywhere that I have gone. I once spent an afternoon playing cards with the daughter of the hotel manager at the Theoxenia Hotel. I was much younger and the hotel didn't look as nice as it appears now... the swimming pool when I was there a hundred years ago looked like it was filled with green jello etc. If my kids read this and come across a reference in one of my old year books about hanging off ledges, this is where I vaulted over a balcony and while holding the rail with one hand pulled back a guy who had jumped off because his girlfriend had broken up with him.
Sorry for the aside. The internet Kylie can be a good place to make contacts and a bad place to make contacts to make further your adventures. When I first went to Ukraine, it was to visit someone whom I had met and conversed with on the Internet for two years. Even as a man I went with a certain trepidation. Just so long as you can connect with people like Michael the Swiss Baker I am sure you will have a great life.

I have to agree with you on the churches. There are so many in Europe. I loved the architecture but had to have a break. All the best in your adventures
