Yesterday I found a copy of a Minneapolis newspaper from May of 1915. I thoroughly enjoyed taking thirty minutes and reading through it, it was like traveling back in time.

Most of the content was about the sinking of the Lusitania. What really caught my attention were the ads.

One thing that surprised me was a men’s suit was priced about the same as a 3/4 carat diamond ring. Adjusted for inflation this would mean that same diamond ring would sell for a few hundred dollars today instead of thousands.

DeBeers has done a pretty effective job in this last hundred years of convincing us that diamonds are worth much more.

Merry Christmas, enjoy the vote!

Thanks and Merry Christmas @berniesanders!

That must have been a lot of fun to read. It's cool to get a glimpse into the past like that. I was also finding the ads fascinating.

From what I've heard, there's an abundance of diamonds, but they withhold the supply to keep the prices up.

It was amazing to read. What struck me is how little we've changed in a century. Life is lived at a faster pace due to the tech available today. but at our core we have the same concerns. I've heard that too about DeBeers, the supply is monitored very closely to regulate price.

Oh yes @ericvancewalton, this is an exciting activity when you read newspapers from the past and of course the prices and the whole life of that time are very different from ours, the more we are interested!

Excellent review, my friend and you are right, reading newspapers that are more than a hundred years old can be mentally transported at that time and some things seem very surprising to us, it is very interesting indeed! Thanks Eric

Diamonds are a jewellers best friend.

Diamonds are so hard that all the abrasives that you would use to polish gold don't even affect the diamond.
So, you can polish right over the diamond.
Thus, you can machine set the diamonds, and then put the effect you want onto the metal. Instead of doing the reverse order, which may destroy all your work while clamped into the machine to set diamonds.

Very interesting! I never even thought of that.

these ads ARE fantastic!! I imagine that those suits are custom made but in 1915 one could get SO much more for $25 or $624 (according to google) than now. amazing.

I bet the craftsmanship was phenomenal back then because people expected things to last a long time. I would guess most working people would keep the same suits for their whole lives.

Yes what a different world!!!

Definitely! It was such a good find. I found a bunch of old newspapers from the early 1940's while remodeling my first house (it was being used as wall insulation). Those pretty much turned to dust after a few days' exposure to sunlight and air.

wow that must have been so cool to see those 1940s papers....I think we can still go to the library and see these old documents on microfiche, I just don't remember that this is possible!

I mean, I don't think to go and look at the library for historical curiosity!

It was amazing! I didn't think of the library either @natureofbeing. Great thought there. I could spend hours looking at old newspapers. It's interesting what has changed but also what has remained unchanged.

One of the best rackets on Earth.

Thank goodness Mene jewelry is offering honest prices on gold jewelry.

It's always good to reflect on the past to see the future.

Peace

You can say that again! Can you imagine the mark-up on these? Peace to you.

DeBeers has done a pretty effective job in this last hundred years of convincing us that diamonds are worth much more.

Prior to DeBeers’s effective propaganda, emeralds were the high-end jewel.

It makes me wonder who monopolized the emerald business prior to diamonds stealing their thunder? I can almost bet someone did.

Diamond ring was only 18$ , very cheap price .
These days were good days .

That is amazing. Diamonds are cut glass from the ground and yet, they're a girl's best friend. That might be proof there are no (unethical) time travelers or else they'd go back and scoop those up to flood the modern market.

Good point! It sure would be nice to travel back to 2009 and scoop up a few thousand bitcoin. : )

@ericvancewalton hello dear friend, what you have found is a real treasure, without a doubt it would have been very pleasant to travel the time, how many other inconsistencies there will be in relation to the ring and the clothing
I take the opportunity to wish you happy holidays, that this Christmas comes to your home full of happiness and love

Thank you @jlufer! I hope you and your family had an amazing Christmas!

That was quite a find, I love reading anything old, still have a very old special edition magazine printed during Queen Elizabeth's coronation. Even the English was different then! Gosh, it's quite amazing about the diamonds!

What an amazing piece of history to own! Have you wanted The Crown on Netflix?

Oh yes, it's an excellent series! I just love all historical & period series as well (Downton Abbey my absolute favourite)

I like the historical series as well! We've gotten into Marvelous Mrs. Maisel on Prime, it's one of the best I've seen. They say it's loosely based on Joan Rivers' career as a comedian.

That must be excellent, oh she had such wit and such a sharp tongue, she was amazing, will look out for that!

@ericvancewalton, Good to hear and see that you've found this so old News Paper and now I've understood why you've used the Time Travel term. Stay blessed. 🙂

Thank you! I wish the same to you.

Welcome and thank you so much. Have a great time ahead. 🙂

This is a golden memory post . Time has been spent but memories are alive .

This is very rare copy of newspaper . This is more than 100 years old memory . Great 👌

If you are able to put an emotional value on something the value definitely increases. I love to read old newspapers too. The current ones I find of little interest.

Thanks for sharing your great find. Where did you find the newspaper?

Yes, you're right! People are irrational when it comes to emotion.

You're welcome! I'm so interested in history like this. I remember, as a child, I was fascinated by the tables at Wendy's restaurant...they used to be covered in Victornian era newspaper ads.

We have a "sharing shelf" in our condo building where people put things they don't want anymore. Someone left it there (unbelievably). Considering 75% of the content is about the sinking of the Lusitania it could be worth something to a collector.

That sharing table sounds fun. Wait for more great finds.
Someone wanted you to find the newspaper. :)

Today is December 25, 2018, Merry Christmas my friend. :)

We’ve found a few gems so far! Merry Christmas To You!
