What Do They Say About "People Who Live In Glass Houses..." (Original Photos)

in life •  7 years ago

I think the saying goes like "people who live in glass houses shouldn't build their house next to a golf course".

When I built my house I carefully selected my location. After all the key to real estate is location, location, location.

Knowing the location and the great and spacious views I would have from my lot, I planned the house to take advantage of the views. Forty windows in all with most facing south toward the golf course.

Golf Tournament

It is the time of year for weekend golf tournaments. And this Saturday morning, 5 August 2017, was no different. I could hear the sound of golf carts, laughter, and cheers as the groups of golfers played the course.

The Best Laid Plans

I checked my SteemIt account and was thinking about my next post when I heard the clothes dryer finish drying a load of clothes. I thought I would fold the laundry, start making lunch, and continue thinking about writing my next SteemIt blog post.

As I was folding laundry I heard a loud pop from the back of the house. I knew almost immediately that a golf ball had hit the house.

Broken Window

I stopped folding laundry and went to check the windows. That is when I noticed the crack in the window pane and saw the glass between the panes.

My windows have three panes of glass, a sealed-gas between two outer panes and blinds between the outer panes and an inner pane. The blinds absorbed the impact of the golf ball and preserved the inner pane.

I removed the inner pane and blinds to reveal the hole through the outer panes of glass. To give it some perspective, the glass is 21 inches wide.

It was an overcast day and the temperature was pleasant outside, the breeze through the hole was actually pretty nice. But the weather forecast predicted rain and thunderstorms. The hole and cracks needed to be sealed up.

Embarrased Golfer

Before I could start the sealing job the door bell rang. I thought that it was likely the golfer. Sure enough it was the golfer.

He was so embarrassed and apologetic. I told him that in the eighteen years I have lived here this is the second time one of my windows had been broken by a golf ball. Its not a big deal to me. It's just par for living next to the course. 😊

The covenants for our home owners association state that golfers are not responsible for any damage caused by errant balls. I signed the covenants, that's life.

I shook the golfer's hand and told him I would take care of it. And wished him a nice weekend. He was so embarrassed he did not even pick up his golf ball.

The Handyman's Best Friend

Next I grabbed my duct tape, the handyman's best friend, and started sealing the hole and cracks inside and out.

After the cracks and hole were sealed, I cleaned up the broken glass with my shop-vac and re-installed the blinds and the inner pane.

It is barely noticeable. 😊 I will just have to lower the camera's tripod when taking pictures of the birds at my feeders. 🐦 And, yes, I dropped a piece of cardboard between the outer panes, my bad. 😞

From the outside it may be a little more noticeable. At least the gray duct tape matches the house.

This golf ball will be added to the other golf balls I find in my yard, except this one has a bit more of a story associated with it.

Duct tape fixes all

Could there be someone more relaxed then you! I like the idea of giving the pictures for fair use, I will think about it in my own posts.
(Resteemed)

Thank you!

Now that the window I usually take photographs through is broken. I need to start processing some of the pictures I had stored in the camera. I was very thankful the golf ball did not take out my camera that was sitting in front of the window.

As for being relaxed about a broken window. When you live in a glass house next to a golf course, you have to expect (and be prepared for) a broken window every now and then. With only two windows broken in 18 years, it's just not that bad.

Have a fantastic weekend!
Steem on,
Mike

I broke more windows in my childood :)
Have a nice day!

Just don't use glass for windows on the golf course side of the house. Use alternatives such as polycarbonate windows etc.
It is that simple haha ;-)

The window being replace is 18 years old. I don't remember polycarbonate windows being offered back then. However, a lot changes in 18 years. When I talk to Pella Windows this week, I will ask about polycarbonate windows.

Have a great week!
Steem on,
Mike

Thank you! I will definitely ask about polycarbonate windows.
