How Many Federal Laws Are There?

No One Knows

.............................................................................................................................................................................
no one can count that high

  • They’ve been accumulating, of course, for more than 200 years. When federal laws were first codified in 1927, they fit into a single volume. By the 1980s, there were 50 volumes of more than 23,000 pages.
    .
And today? Online sources say that no one knows. The Internal Revenue Code alone, first codified in 1874, contains more than 3.4 million words and, if printed 60 lines to the page, is more than 7,500 pages long. There are about 20,000 laws just governing the use and ownership of guns.
    .
New laws mean new crimes. From the start of 2000 through 2007, Congress had created at least 452 new crimes, so that at that time the total number of Federal crimes exceeded 4,450.
    .
Of course, times change and laws need to be updated. But many laws detract from, rather than contribute to, our quality of life and overall well-being. It is impossible for anyone to know all of the laws that affect them and it is, therefore, impossible to not break any laws. How many of the 4,450 crimes have you broken?

The Iron Law of Bureaucracy

  • ........in any bureaucratic organization there will be two kinds of people":
    .
First, there will be those who are devoted to the goals of the organization. Examples are dedicated classroom teachers in an educational bureaucracy, many of the engineers and launch technicians and scientists at NASA, even some agricultural scientists and advisors in the former Soviet Union collective farming administration.
    .
Secondly, there will be those dedicated to the organization itself. Examples are many of the administrators in the education system, many professors of education, many teachers union officials, much of the NASA headquarters staff, etc.
    .
The Iron Law states that in every case the second group will gain and keep control of the organization. It will write the rules, and control promotions within the organization.

There ought to be a law.

ya think?

  • ...when you say "there ought to be a law" you are saying "it's worth killing people to ensure that this happens" or "to make this less likely to happen."
    .
That's what "law" means. That's what law is.

Three Felonies A Day: How the Feds Target the Innocent

  • The average professional in this country wakes up in the morning, goes to work, comes home, eats dinner, and then goes to sleep, unaware that he or she has likely committed several federal crimes that day.
    .
    Why?
    .
The answer lies in the very nature of modern federal criminal laws, which have exploded in number but also become impossibly broad and vague. In Three Felonies a Day, Harvey A. Silverglate reveals how federal criminal laws have become dangerously disconnected from the English common law tradition and how prosecutors can pin arguable federal crimes on any one of us, for even the most seemingly innocuous behavior.
    .
The volume of federal crimes in recent decades has increased well beyond the statute books and into the morass of the Code of Federal Regulations, handing federal prosecutors an additional trove of vague and exceedingly complex and technical prohibitions to stick on their hapless targets. The dangers spelled out in Three Felonies a Day do not apply solely to “white collar criminals,” state and local politicians, and professionals. No social class or profession is safe from this troubling form of social control by the executive branch, and nothing less than the integrity of our constitutional democracy hangs in the balance.

what does that say about those who are supposed to be enforcing the law?

It is in fact impossible to ever know how many federal statutes are on the book. Some laws are kept secret because they are written by private standards organizations who copyright the regulations they write before it is incorporated so it's illegal to publish it without their permission.

are you saying that it's illegal to know if you are acting legally?

Quite possibly yes. I posted something about it back in February.

The government should be required to print a full binded copy of "the law" and mail it to each and every individual in the country. A first print and a new one every time a law is changed/updated. That would truly expose how insane it has gotten.

This wouldn't do much good because we can't understand the laws anyway. It's written in the language of lawyers.

Haha. True. Well i was thinking more of how we would all be receiving 15 boxes full of heavy books. Just the physical size would be jaw dropping.

The tax code (and supplements) is tens of thousands of pages by itself! I do wonder, there are so many laws at the Federal/State level, how many of them overlap and, even more scary, contradict one another?

The lunatics have been in charge of the asylum for quite a while now.

It is often said that the government eventually writes enough laws so that everyone is a criminal.

I think the US tax code epitomizes that concept.

Very good post @everittdmickey. Thank you.

Ayn Rand said as much quite often in her books..

This looks like a fascinating book. I've long felt that the gov't is just collecting records of our crimes so it has an excuse to lock anyone up as soon as they become inconvenient.

Part of life is dealing with laws we either don't understand and or don't know about. It's about risk and minimizing the risk of adverse circumstances.

are you saying that the government is the enemy?

I wouldn't say my neighbors are necessarily my enemy. I wouldn't say they are my friends either. The government is my neighbors. It's in my interest to minimize my exposure to certain parts of the government like prison, jail, court, etc.

Excelente post, muy interesante, gracias por compartirlo.

Saludos :)
