Saving my family from Hypothermia - A boiler story.

in life •  7 years ago  (edited)

I have a relatively small office in my house where I sit most of the day working and on a day like today glued to my screen watching the markets.

I got the screen up right now and looking at 1000 dollar Bitcoin swings.

I know some people live for this shit but from experience I know I shouldn't partake trading these markets.

I also know most will lose money.

Therefore I took my profits on the way up and now the crypto cowboys can ride these waves.

My computer generates some nice heat and it's usually not even necessary to heat this room.

After sitting here for hours in the afternoon I left my office to use the restroom.

It was then that I realized that the house had turned into the artic.

I went upstairs to find Bianca wrapped in several blankets.

I intelligently said, 'I think the heating broke'.

'No shit!', she replied.

I went to investigate.

Now I know not everyone on Steemit is familiar with central heating. So let me explain real quick for the layman (me).

We have this metal box in the garage that warms up water and sends it via pipes to every room in the house. In every room, there is another metal thing called a radiator connected to the pipes.

You can open up the radiator and then warm water flows into the thing and radiates heat that warms up the room.

This is as far as my knowledge goes.

I went to the garage and there it was. A big blinking red light. Code number 5!

It looked bad.

I pressed the reset button but nothing happened.

I decided to approach the problem like a man.

I gave the boiler a tap with a hammer and then pressed the reset button.

But nothing happened.

It was getting too late to call an expert so I did the next intelligent thing.

I went to google.

I have no idea how people used to find things out before Google but I quickly learned that code number 5 meant that the condense could not escape the metal box. There must be a blockage somewhere.

I removed the cover from the metal box.

Inside the metal box was a plastic pipe.

I decided to unscrew it. The house was already freezing anyway.

When I unscrewed it I saw the hole that was left was filled with hard grey gunk.

I grabbed a screwdriver and started to chip away at it.

I started to sweat.

I must have spent 10 minutes chipping away at the grey stuff when all of the sudden it broke!

Water poured out of the hole!

Could this be Code number 5?

I put everything back together and pressed the reset button!

Instantly, the metal box sprang into life!

I felt propper proud I can tell you that.

I went upstairs to deliver the good news to the girlfriend.

She was mildly impressed.

I then told my dad.

He was impressed!

He said, 'You must be the first member of our family to have ever repaired anything!'

I was happy.

Saving my family from Hypothermia is the proudest things I have done in a while!

No market action can beat that!

Hahaha, good read man. I'm a bit put off by that you didn't call me straight away 😂

LOL me too 😂

😂

... :/

"I decided to approach the problem like a man. I gave the boiler a tap with a hammer " :))) that was hilarious. That feeling of successfully repairing something even though you hardly know how it works it awesome and you deserve to bask in all its glory.

Excellent work my friend, i am so happy to hear that you repair that boiler without any expert and also save your family from hypothermia, you use goggle services very wisely too, google really makes our life's easy and we can get any sort of information with the help of google, that's what technology is all about, thanks for sharing this story with us, Stay awesome and have a fantastic week ahead.

Lol! I love your writing! Made me laugh! Good Job with the fix!!

Wow!!, your really tried. Sometimes you will just find out, our home appliances will just go wrong which you will just fill like trying it out. But with just some few minutes or hours you will be surprise that you have just fixed it.
Well done, that's a good experience.

Wow. Great one there @exyle. How did you celebrate this achievement. You have taught me to celebrate little achievement and goals. Maybe you should fall of rhw wagon again :) Hope you have taken a beer from the fridge. I am sure bianca was chilling one or two for you. :)
Or is there going to be a surprise for us tomorrow on how you spent this night with various delicacies. We are waiting to see the pictures. Nice feat there. Glad that the household were proud of you. We here are too. A very good way to end the day. Take care Thanks for the post

I am also impressed! By you because you repaired the central heating and that's something. But I'm also impressed by your father, what a self-knowledge he exhibits there! (LOL)

Wow. What a relief. Glad you rectified the issue. I really understand the state you were in. That was a smart move looking it up google. There wouldnt be enough time to call for help.
Just incase you find your self in such again, maybe bianca could try almond drink (use almond powder but already pre-mixed with some sugar, soya powder, and skimmed milk powder).
Taste great =D
Just an opinion. Glad you solved the family problem. The feeling is more than the feedback from people using steemify:)
Have a good one.

You know when you said that saving your family was the proudest thing you've done in a while, steemify and witness came to my mind, but thank God you later mentioned witness.
You sure saved in addition to the lives of your family, some money, and got your rep in your dad's sight to a higher level. But to the lovely steemians who have heard what you've said, and would like to do their repairs themselves, I'll like to give some advice they should take before going ahead with repairing their heating system themselves.
Before you get started it is really important to have a quick think about yourself and others around you. It is important to make sure that everyone is safe before you start and that you don't take any unnecessary risks.
Do not go beyond your abilities. Stop when you do not understand what you are looking at or doing; know your limits. There is no shame is calling in a professional.

Wow. @Exyle to the rescue. :)
Knew you felt great to receive the compliment from Bianca and Dad. Great job there i must say.
Really glad google helped out. I know the kind of pressure you were in when the first trials didnt work, but thanks to google. It is good to remember that having regular heating maintenance will help to prevent major issues from arising during the heating season. Nice post and awesome writing. Like your humour

Your google-fu is strong! I think it's time to have the system flushed and new coolant added. Sounds like your biocides have failed. Something like this:
https://www.fernox.com/bacterial-control/af10-biocide-500ml

This is Kool. Am happy you got to take some profits from the rise in price.
When you said you were working and sweating, I began to imagine how intense the work was, cause the room was as cold as the artic, and yet you could still sweat in it. You sure had a lot of chipping away to do.
You know, don't be sad bianca was mildly impressed, women believe thats our job as men and we should not get a pat in the back for doing it. But your dad as a man understands what you went through, cause he has probably been In those shoes, that's why he appreciated it so much.
Am glad it turned out well.

Glad the problem was well handled. I don't know why we always have the feeling that when you hit a faulty device with a hammer, it gets the matter solved. I've done it so many times, and even though I got no result the last time I did it, I'll still do it unconsciously the next time I have a faulty device.

Sure Google really came in handy, proving how much software has really helped make our lives better - a feat steemify is doing also.
Just as Google helped you to find quick solution, steemify helps make our steemit experience smoother and faster, getting information quickly to your notice. The both softwares are fulfilling their different purposes adequately.

Great post there @exyle. Haha @ the first statement you made. How would you blame the laptop when you dont even have time away from your system. To even leave your screen to give us the wonderful posts we crave daily is an issue :)
I guess the heater issue really allowed the laptop have some rest and gave you a task different from steemify updates and other online issues and work. Its time to get down dirty and sweat a little bit. But i agree that the feeling after the issue was solved is great. Atleast they have a mindset that you are a solution provider whether it be in steemit(steemify) or in the real world.
Really glad that Bianca was fine :). Great post i must say. Thanks for showing us another side of what you can do.

Congrats @exyle for repairing it.

i like where you said that you approached the problem like a man.

Hahaha! It brought out the man in me too just reading it.

He said, 'You must be the first member of our family to have ever repaired anything!'

That is just an amazing achievement! I am stunned, seems like you have risen above yourself today. Well done m8!

I think I have :)

Mooi man, you leave me with a big smile.
Good internet is there for all solutions😊 ; but still you have to do it; and you DID!

Hmm, and glad you had it sorted out, before Hypothermia became the issue. In addition to the heat from your laptop, I believe there is no way you can be steeming and yet feel cold. The steem from steemit would heat you up. Probably that's what has been heating you up you could not Notice the heater was broken. To solve the problem, all you just needed to do was to tell bianca and your dad to get online and start steeming, and before you know it, the steem will heat them up, no need for the heater.

This is really awesome. It seems the heat from the laptop really served as a heater for you.
You handled the heater problem very well, and Google really came in handy.
For those who have heaters, and would probably like to solve some of their heater problems themselves and save some cost, I know of a site that has close to 21 heater problems and how to solve them. It has really come In handy for me for sometime now. The website is http://www.home-repair-central.com/electric-hot-water-heater-troubleshooting.html

You dad was really proud of you, his son being a real man. Kool

@exyle,
Dude don't tell this to others, then service people will loose their jobs :D Google made things easy nah!
Anyway nice move out from the BTC at the right time!

Cheers~

Bitcoin is going crazy right now @exyle wow! And same here my computer keeps my room warm but its not good during the summer still its so cold right now even the PC and heater sometimes arent enough, well done of fixing the boiler saved you money also.

haha now that is a very manly thing to do! Now, would you mind teaching my husband how to bleed the radiators... xD

Congratulations on saving the family from hypothermia. You did a little research and managed to fix the problem in short order. If you called the repair man you would need to wait a few hour to a day for him to come and then his bill would be really huge.

Thanks ;)

Ironman. Superhero. Wow. Great achievement. You really did well. I commend you.
Thanks for rescuing bianca. Its your job though. :)
Once in a while, its good we appreciate how much we get money and make a fortune from the internet because a lot others have to work in pains and sweat a lot to get pennies. So i guess you agree with me. Enjoy. Have a great day.

Great one there. I see you are a problem solver both on steemit and in real life. Proud of you as your dad and sweetheart. The feeling cannot be explained. Really great idea looking it up on google. Bianca shouldnt just be mildly impressed, she should have jumped on you with great happiness, but i guess thats women for you. Its not your fault that the heat source had issues :) She should prepare a nice dish for you or probably chill a beer ASAP. You are their hero.
It wont be funny waiting for the heater guys.
Thanks for being them for them. Have a great one.

You sure felt really proud when your dad gave you a pat on the back You've surely deserve it, especially after that sharp response in such a short notice.
I was reading the post from the top to the bottom for the second time when I noticed a change had been made to the last sentence in the post.
This one is relay good, and blends into the total message well.
Hope bianca would not need all those blankets anymore, now that you've done a really good job with the heater.
Nice one.

Lol your stories are great. And a good thing you got it fixed because we have some cold nights coming up! :) Btw do you know of more people In Rotterdam doing Steemit? We could do a Meetup?

I think a meet up is planned for somewhere in January or February but I have not gotten any details yet.

That's really cool! I'd love to be there. What would be the best way to be informed about that?

Lol. Hypothermia. So the @blockbrothers couldn't unblock the blocked pipe. I have a suggestion. Can we get an app that tells us when the house is loosing heat. Haha. You were on your own. I am sure the whole heat of bitcoin rising and favourable market, including the busy mind kept you hot. Really glad you repaired that. Who knows what would have happened.
Now thats a job one cannot avoid when with the family, its the hardest atimes and still there is no pay, wait hold on i think there is a pay, the steem dollars earned here would do. :)
But i salute your quick response and idea of google. Glad the whole family was proud of you and you sure have done a proud thing. When we have electric faults here at home, i know the Superman feeling i have while i am being praised. Enjoy the moment friend.

You sure have acted as a man,and you just got another feather added to your cap when your dad said you were the first person to ever repair anything in the family.
Hope the water was not too hot to burn your skin when it spilled open. It might be cool to allow the water in the pipes to cool before working on the faulty heater.

Maybe, one day you'll begin steemrepair posts just as you began steemfat posts.
Have a good one.

That is awesome, and it resonates with me because I am a Google fixit guy. Oh no, not the type who makes videos showing how to replace the clutch on a 2007 Mazda 3... I'm the guy who watches the video and then tackles it like the boss I wish I was. Here's to defeat of code number 5!

Sounds like me :)

@exyle Now If I could just get you to swing by my House and Renovate the Bathrooms...........LOL

super story and nice article
i waiting for your next story

lol.. zo koud is het hier toch nog niet? maar in Ede gaat het wel vanacht sneeuwen volgens het nieuws maar jullie zijn in rotterdam toch? wel vet man

You should be very, very proud of yourself; you handyman.
That is a really cool story where the setback turned out to be a great accomplishment for you.

That's pretty funny:)

I also can't trade bitcoin, although I don't think anybody knows what will happen there. The truth is, I would just get addicted to the graphs and end up with number brain, just like when I was 13 and saw tetris pieces floating down when I closed my eyes. It's better for me to not do that stuff.

this is a great story, really!

great things are done, by performing "small tasks".

Well done mate, you deserve all the up votes.

Great post with quality humour, beautiful post i must say.
Thank God you were sensitive and went to be the man of the house as always. Haha.
Apart from what was already stated, one’s judgment is impared when hypothermic or thereabout. A friwnd of mine has been hypothermic at least twice and borderline a few more times. Looking back, one can surprise oneself at how stupid one can be when cold enough.
When one is that close to the edge, a poor descision is ill-afforded. I know you must feel lile a king after solving the feeling of victory with people around yoy being impressed.
My friend i agree with you, no market action can beat that. :)
Thank you so much

awesome post.You should be proud.

nice experience, i interest this boiler story

This is sure awesome. Am glad the water heater was repaired. I guess you'll power up the money you were meant to pay the repair man. Lol.
Okay, for those who would likely want to follow your steps to repair their faulty water heaters and save their funds for steemit power up, Here are a number of the things that you should consider, but please remember this is only a guide and not an exhaustive list:

1 - Clothing and Equipment: Make sure that you are dressed for the work that you are doing. Tie back long hair, remove jewellery and loose clothing which might get caught. Use protective clothing and other equipment. Dust sheets are very useful, but make sure that they are not a trip hazard

2 - Water: Central heating water is almost always dirty. Use protective sheets on all capets and vulnerable surfaces which could be stained otherwise

3 - Ladders and Roof spaces: You might find yourself in the roof space; Make sure you have a torch and watch where you tread as no one wants to go through the ceiling. Take care entering through the loft hatch, and don't leave anything you could slip or tip on there

I hope these little tips were helpful, but don't forget like I said this is not an exhaustive list, but just a guide.

Good job @exyle, glad you did not go trading when it's not your thing, and you took profit while the uptrend lasted. Good one.

i tell you what, your stories are amazing. simply amazing. i read this out to @dayleeo ;) so funny.

hahahaha my favorite part was @bkdbkd 's "no shit." 😂

Nicee reding here ty for this before I take a long deserved sleep :)

Fix with action no talkative. Filosophy of worker. Salut.

I'm following you now

You should be proud. I did not repaired like anything:). And yes, Google is awesome.

motivating..nice post..

we have a saying in NZ "Gotta have a go"
quite often it works, if it fails, at least you had a go/

Lol the 1st man to repair ;)
Google did manage to find sth good :)

Didn't expect a story about repairing a boiler to be fun. But you sir, didn't let me down, I'm myself hopeless at repairing anything except for bikes haha. By the way I hope you don't mind me asking, what do you work as in your office?

Mining is the best way to heat a house this days HAHAHAH

you know what thats really so proudest thing to do home works without any expert btw google is expert too hahaha whats the temp in your country like you said your house was freezing like hell . glad you got the answer from google otherwise the experts are like loooters of money lol . as you can see it was hard but simple the thing is blockage and if you call the expert it will take too much time for them to reach at your house plus they will take good money for just removing blockage lol.

you used the presence of mind there great work @exyle :)

you did a fantastic job so awesome you are : )

everyone is impressed from you after that man :)

Great execution of skills and mind great to read and learn about that

i would have not fixed that if i was at your place for instance you did great work

googling the right thing at the right time :)

The proudest thing ever for sure !!!! a sense of satisfaction which no one could else get

interesting to read this along so awesome

i am happy too just like you after reading that story you did really well there

that's a lot of work you did too good
