Time vs. Money

in life •  8 years ago

Wow! life can really keep you busy at times. This week is crazy and it will be crazy for a while longer. Work seems to have exploded and of course, I’m very grateful for that. Had some amazing jobs and more to come.

I also force myself to spend at least an hour in the gym every weekday now to work on my health. Whenever I come home I just change and go. I don’t think about it. I just do it.

What little time is left I want to spend with Bianca. Being so busy does make you think if it’s worth it.

I had one hour. We decided to walk Trevor (dog).

I’m not always this crazy busy but now that I am I wonder about the people that are. I know some of them. They work at least 60 hours a week. Working that much per week doesn’t leave much time for enjoyment or relaxation. Of course, they do earn a good sum of money. It’s not all negative.

Time vs. Money.

Most of the time it seems to be time vs. money for a lot of people. The same for me. Every hour that I work I earn more and I get a little richer but I also lose something. Something I can never get back.

I lose one hour of my life that I can’t spend with my girlfriend, friends, family, hobbies you name it.

I was driving home today and was thinking to myself.

Mark, imagine if this is your life for the next 10 years would you enjoy it?

The answer came to me pretty fast. Working this hard for the next 10 years would drive me insane. There wouldn’t be any time left for the enjoyment of life. I would not be able to do it.

So, I arrived at a simple conclusion. I need to get smarter about the way I earn money or settle for less.

I love dogs. He walked past this stick like he couldn't care less. I grabbed it and walked with it. He saw and it became the most important thing in the world :)

I read somewhere that the perfect income for happiness is around $75000 a year. Or $6250 a month. After that, it still adds some but not that much. Well even when I work this hard I would have trouble reaching that number. So, I got my work cut out for me.

Luckily, I have one thing going for me. I am already very happy and feeling positive. The world might be unstable at the moment (if you read the news) but for it’s not.

I am doing better than ever.

Hey there, brother!

Man, you work real hard! But you definately got your priorities spot on. Life is all about balance and you entertaining the idea of sparing your valuable time for your little treasures are wise words indeed.

Many people I know are caught up in the rat race and have never looked back since. Bless you, buddy and appreciate your intelligent views on life... :)

He, man! Thank you for your nice comment. I try to find balance and keep my eye on what I think is valuable. I'm learning about life while I chug along :)

A great reminder that we need to make sure our lives are balanced. I went through a two year period about six years ago where I regularly worked 60-70hrs per week at my day job. Everything else suffered and I really didn't have much to show for it after taxes. I'll never do that again. Thanks!

Thank you. It seems you have hands on experience with working a lot over an extended period of time. I can imagine many things suffering from that. Did you work that hard to try to get back on top after the housing crisis? I'm glad you are doing much better now.

You're welcome. Trying to pay off debt was part of it but mostly the extended hours were due to a computer system change that caused 3 times more work for everyone. Management didn't want to admit the bad decision so everyone suffered for a few years until fixes were put in place to streamline processes. This is one reason Choose Yourself resonated so loudly with me...the feeling of not having control of the situation.

O man....working like a dog because somebody else made a mistake must be horrible. What a bad way to treat your workers. And no way to control that situation. I can feel your pain. I don't like not having control either.

I loved the book Choose Yourself. It has changed my way of looking at my business and myself a lot. Again thanks so much for recommending it. It has affected most of the decisions I have made since.

It was that very situation that made Choose Yourself so potent for me. I'm happy that it resonated with you as well! It really is amazing how a book like that can completely change your perspective.

There are infinite paths of choice between "To Have and to Be":)
And some people think that To Have=To Be :(

I need to let this one sink in a little longer. I'm going to have to a think about it on my way to work today.

TRUMP = more jobs

I hope they will be good paying jobs too. A strong middle class forms a stable society.

Usually we say time is money, but I think Time is breathing.

As long as it's not time = work :)

Life always needs a balance, isn't it? Money cannot buy everything but you need to have enough to enjoy your life...

Hi @rea. Finding balance is important but no always easy. Yes! I also always say money is not important you just need to have enough of it :)

Hi @exyle, I just stopped back to let you know your post was one of my favourite reads yesterday and I included it in my Steemit Ramble. You can read what I wrote about your post here.

You are right, but it's not always a choice between time and money. When you have children they need all kind of things that costs momey and also a lot of time to raise them and help them on their way. What's important is that you can limit yourself and keep in mind what's really important.
I choose to stop working at 62 to spend time with my husband in France. Less money than when I stayed working till 66, but what a wonderful time we have here in France. I also have time (when in Holland) to be with my children and grandchildren (if they have time!!!). So its important to stop working when you are still in good health and can do things you like and spend time with the ones you love.
