Is it ok to feed stray animals?

in life •  7 years ago
Many dogs and cats have been abandoned and left to wonder the streets near me lately, and i can not just simply pass by without giving them a cuddle and some water&food.Remember it isn't the animal fault he's on the streets, they often get abandoned and left in the cold,it is cruel to let them go hungry. Dog&cat food is not that expensive and lately I've quit smoking so i have some spare money to go on a weekly basis and buy some food for the little guys.

This post is just a friendly reminder ; If you have some spare money why not go once, twice a month and give some food to the needy animals you find on the streets. You can cut water bottles in half and pour some water for them.

Many people may think this is wrong

I've saw one question on Qora

Is Ok to feed stray animals?

And this is some of the comments this question received

Naturally, since they are stray, they have to hunt food to survive. After feeding them, they will feel there is no need to start hunting since this human is willing to give food to them.
But, what happens when you stop feeding them? They wait, and wait, and eventually they may even starve to death.

He may be right, but if the government just let them on the streets with no food and no water, why is it so wrong if i just feed them?Instead of wandering and searching food in the trash, they may be better with some actual animal food.If everybody yells at them, kick them, and treats them as trash,it is a probability that they will eventually get aggressive

No. Unless you are prepared to pet it in your home. Because when you feed a stray dog, it makes more puppies and makes more stray dogs

Sure, this happens.I have taken some dogs and cats to the vet in my area and got them some antirabic&immunity shots as well as some parasite treatment.I do not agree with castration.Everybody tells me to get my dog castrated, why? If someone would cut your balls, how would you feel? I just let my dog hump a leg sometimes and that's it.The solution is not castration.

You may get the stray animal following you when you do not intend keeping it, and that is hurtful for both the animal and you. But if the animal is already entrenched, feeding it may extend its life enough to have a chance to be picked up by a caring human. Of course, some animals do tend to become the neighborhood stray and be fed by many, so there is no real general answer, but if you do want to avoid trouble at the expense of some emotional guilt, you should not feed a stray and let others take the responsibility.

No.Take the responsibility .Feed them.Care for them.If you can , adopt. If you have the means to help, do it.

A domestic animal has no ability to hunt, especially when it's a dog... I can even think about think question "if it's OK". Of course it's OK, I live in a big city where there's no opportunity for hunting even for cats, they will just die without human help.

I agree inber. I also live in a big city, where the city officials doesn't care about them.If we have the means to help , why not? A bag of 5kg dog or cat food does not exceed 10$ here.

I don't see any problem feeding them. They need food. Also the first two quoted answer have their logic. If you are given food, you won't try to earn it again. Same thing might happen to them.

I agree. But what can they hunt in the big city? I haven't seen any dog or cat trying to hunt down a can of tuna

I live in Canada. Luckily most towns and cities have Animal Shelters that accept any domestic animal that is in distress, restore their health and spay/neuter them - and then put them up for adoption. Unfortunately, true strays (dogs and cats) that must fend for themselves are usually taken care of by wild coyotes (or in the case of larger dogs, integrated into the pack).

All my pets (dogs and cats) have always been rescue animals I got from the SPCA (Animal Shelter) - the best place to go for pets!

We have animals shelters here in Romania, but poorly funded, dirty, and understaffed. Not all of them.I have been a volunteer at one of them, and i have to tell you, animals are probably better on the streets.

I'm sorry, that sucks. The poor animals.
