Linden Trees

in life •  7 years ago  (edited)

Currently, and for some time already, I live in a relatively small town (below 100 thousands inhabitants).

Despite having an elongated form, any side of the town is within walking distance from the opposite one, if a person puts his or her mind to do it.

Therefore, unless there is an urgent matter or bad weather, I prefer to walk to wherever I have to go. Sometimes I walk just because I like to do it, without any direction, for pure enjoyment / relaxation.

I don't know if linden trees grow in your area. During the second half of May and June, the fragrance of their flowers flood the air here in my town, to our delight.

There use to be much more linden trees in my town. In a very unpopular town hall decision of some years ago, all linden trees from the public domain were cut down and replaced by ornamental trees. The reason for this decision was that linden trees grow surface roots, which affect the sidewalks and the streets, while the ornamental trees don't.

While the economic justification seems correct (removes a source of damages to sidewalks and streets, which otherwise need constant repairs), this time of year I also feel nostalgic about the lost linden trees. Now, the only ones to spread their powerful perfume come from private property yards.

And, it's not like the town hall didn't find other ways to waste public funds. They always do.

Lately, I "wasted" too many hours in front of the computer and didn't even notice that spring is practically over. We have a garden and I enjoy it, but I missed a lot of the coming back to life ritual of nature. And that's a shame...

We have trees and flowers in my neighbourhood for beautification purposes , flowers are planted in most all compound to add some serenity to the surrounding but we don't have linden tree where we live @gadrian

Yes, most of the linden trees here were old, planted many years ago, I believe it's not customary to be planted in any urban environment anymore. Maybe in a park or in a small forest, they can still be planted without worrying about the damages produced by roots. Thanks for your comment @obest.
