That phone call you never want to get.

in life •  7 years ago

I got one of those dreaded phone calls today; You know, one of those calls that makes you feel sick or throws you into emotional turmoil. "Your wife was just in a car accident!"

For some reason I thought the worst and even as I was still on the phone talking I was on my way to the car and...Well, to wherever I had to be. Anyway, in the next minute or so the news improved somewhat, "She is ok, just shaken up...", however I was still pretty worried as you may imagine. I got home and saw my wife was walking around, unmarked and, so far, feeling ok which was a relief. We had a hug and she started to explain what happened, although in the intervening hours the story has changed somewhat as she recalls more details.

The car, a 4x4, will probably be written off however the insurance company will make that judgement after the crash repairer has quoted on the repair. To be honest I would rather they write it off and if they don't, and return it repaired, I'll sell it anyway. I don't want my wife driving it anymore. It's forced my hand somewhat though as we are in the process of buying a new vehicle and I was going to sell my pickup truck but now I've decided to keep my truck for my wife to drive as it's big and tough. I don't want to risk her getting hurt. Image source

Now, hours later we've had time to think things through and we are both just grateful that she is ok. She's pretty tough really, and I'm proud of how she handled the scenario. We're also pleased that we have a rule of never leaving each other in a bad mood, angry, or without saying I love you. The thing is that with the increase of mobile phone usage whilst driving, inattentive and drunk driving and through there simply being more traffic on the road car accidents are more prevalent and one never know's when it can happen. I would never forgive myself if we left something unsaid and an accident occurred removing the opportunity to say it.

So, my girl is sitting next to me on the couch sipping a cup of tea and relaxing. She's been on the phone a lot talking with her mum and other relatives who all found out about the accident through the family-grapevine. She's fine, not feeling any pain or headaches, although is feeling pretty sad about her car as she loved it. I'm feeling pretty happy that she's ok though and content that she'll be driving my Ranger from now on and in a more suitable and safe car.

Damn, hope she isn't shaken up too badly. Sometimes there is a delayed reaction to the event so keep an eye out for her as you will anyway. Message me if I can do something also.

Cool, thanks bro. I'll send you a message...

Phew! I'm glad to hear she's okay, especially since it sounds like the car didn't fair so well.

Just a caution, it can take a couple days to feel the physical effects of the accident. You might want to get help before the pain starts. A massage therapist (usually connected to a physical therapist or chiropractor) can be helpful in minimizing the effects. I had a severe concussion in college and massage therapy was the best remedy. A trained therapist will know how to help based on how the car was struck, where she was looking, etc. I hope this helps :)

I'm glad you can be by her side!

Hey @helenoftroy ironically she was on her way to a massage when she had the crash. We are going to keep an eye on things ourselves and she is off to the doctor on Thursday actually. She reported the accident to the police as per the law and so it's all on record. We're hoping it'll work out without any fuss. Thanks for your comment and concern. Much appreciated.

Glad to hear she's safe!

Thanks mate, yes she’s fine. It was a bit of a shock for her though being the first car crash she’s had. Her car is a bit of a mess, but that’s just steel and plastic.

Mehn.!!! You should be exceedingly grateful. A similar one came in some years back and the event didn't end well. Happy for you. Family union. Tell your wife @kolossus says she's strong!!!!

Hi @kolossus I'll be sure to tell her! Thanks for your message. :)

We're also pleased that we have a rule of never leaving each other in a bad mood, angry, or without saying I love you.

I hope to have this someday. Thank God your wife is fine.

Hey @vanessahampton we have always put each other before anything else and manage to set aside any ego and pride when it comes to our relationship. We understand that for us gratitude, understanding and giving without expectation when it comes to each other means we share a more fulfilling and complete life together.

I hope you find it also. Thanks for your comment. Much appreciated.

I'm very happy t hear that she's pretty fine and unaffected by the accident, it's a good news really. Your wife is really lucky.
Well just take your time to watch her in case she develops side effects.

Yes, I agree...I'll keep my eyes on her...She's really beautiful so that'll be easy :)

Good to hear that she is alright.

I haven't been in an accident in a while knock on wood. Glad your wife is OK

Cheers. Also good to hear you have not had a car accident for a while.

Awww! This is so sweet! So much love for your wife. I appreciate the fact that you love and value her.
And am also grateful that she is safe. So I celebrate with you and your family!

Hi nice to meet you. My name's @chanmaly 👩

Glad she is ok

I would never forgive myself if we left something unsaid and an accident occurred removing the opportunity to say it.

That one hit me hard. I wake up every day knowing the last conversation I had with my mom was a shitty argument over something stupid. I beat myself up over it every day. Tell your loved ones you love them every day. You truly don't know when it is the last time.

I think maybe many people don’t think about that until it is too late.

Glad she's ok! I know that car wrecks happen every day, but when you hear about them happening to someone you know, it's scary. I think that's awesome you two don't leave angry or without saying, "I love you." Life is weird and crazy things can happen. You don't want to live with regrets.

I'm sorry it messes up your plans to sell your truck, but glad that you're going to be able to find a good use for it... keeping your wife safe.

Again, glad she's ok!

Thanks man, much appreciated. She loved her 4x4 but as an older car (2007) it just doesn't have the safety features my Ranger XLT does. And the good thing is I get to keep my Ranger and get my LC200 as well! :)

Oh my.... the first paragraph man, my heart dropped. Had to skip ahead to make sure she was ok.. phew. Now I will read the rest.

Glad no harm it seems whatsoever. I too would react the way you did for mine. Ughhh

(and in an ironic twist of fate, your other baby is staying home too) hahaha but yea man, happy for her health for you.

Praying for health in my family as well. Stay safe.

Thanks man. Yes, the phone call kind of took me by surprise.

We'll not know if her car will be a write off for a week or more whilst the insurance process rolls out but either way I'm getting rid of it. She can drive my Ranger which is a much safer car. I'll have my LC200 around the end of April so I'll only need my ranger when I go shooting and stuff.

Thanks for your concern. The moral of the story is to never leave anything unsaid when you leave your loved ones.

That is a great concept to take away from this. @kelsnm may have small arguments here and there and disagree on things but we always leave on an "I love you" as well. Life is so precious.

Things like that really makes us think of our priorities. Hope she's doing well now.

She’s fine, thanks. Yes, having ones’ priorities in order is essential to have a complete and fulfilled life I believe.

Indeed. When I thought of your log and I guess more scary would be someone calling my wife and informing her that I was in an accident.
