We have a lot of chaos right now in this country; teachers and health sector workers have gone to the streets because of a fear that the government wants to privatize both sectors. This fear is because of two articles in a new law, I believe their fear is right, this law is required by the IMF to give Honduras a very large loan.
We have roadblocks, police using gases, police beating up citizens, citizens beating up the police, cars burned, windows broken, rocks, molotov cocktails and all the usual things that come routinely with these events.
But today we had an additional, unexpected event, some people stacked car tires at the entrance to the US embassy and set them on fire, the fire lasted for some 20 minutes I guess, not much damage resulted from it but I guess the embassy won't be open for visas for a couple of weeks.
Now of course the culprits would have to be the people who are in the manifestations, the teachers doctors and all other people who join these type of marches. But I smell something very fishy here, I saw photographs of a guy setting fire to some 12 car tires in front of the embassy door- now this guy is by himself and strangely something that is so well guarded as the US embassy had no security personnel guarding this door, also no Honduras police around the place. I think this is a set up.
Yesterday it became known that the Honduras president has been or is being investigated for drug dealing and money laundering by the DEA but hasn't been charged probably because the US Government backs him because he is "business friendly", the DEA even said they could not negate or confirm if he is still being investigated. I think this fire is just an attempt to make people look the other way.
This is a guy setting the tires on fire. How can security at a US embassy be so lax? If it is I think the US should really look into safeguarding these buildings.
