We have a friend who is from Philippines who will be coming back with her husband sometime this year. At one point, he didn't want to go, so my wife was invited for a while. I think that made him jealous or something because he decided he'd go instead. It'll be interesting. I'm not sure how often they've been back since they were married, but he doesn't really like much of anything other than American comfort food. So, we'll see. I think they're planning to stay in hotels in different places, so maybe he'll find something to his liking. :)
My wife hadn't really seen much of Mexico outside of a small circle of states before we were married. We ended up going to all kinds of places after that. She said exactly the same thing. It's sad, but you get caught up in life and maintaining life that seeing what your own country has to offer gets lost in the mix.
My friendn's husband who stayed here for almost eight years before going back to the US got used to some food but he will only eat just enough to satisfy his taste. He would still prefer American food. I think that when you visit another country, it's best not to expect much especially in developing countries like ours. Life is different here. It would be great to have some familiar things but not to expect everything to be the same from where you came from. Does that makes sense?

Yes, I do, and unfortunately, the stereotype of Americans in essence not traveling well, meaning, by and large they expect to be able to speak their language wherever they go and eat food they're used to, can be pretty true. I don't know what the actual statistics are, but I do know people who have more or less gone with that attitude.
I'd probably be the same, if I hadn't met my wife and been to Mexico a few times. I'm not sure what they're designated (why isn't there a second world country? why don't we ever here of them?), but they definitely have different health and safety practices, and I've fallen sick from something my stomach didn't think was properly prepared. It's been such a long time now since I've even been there, let alone in a place where I could probably get sick again, I don't know how I would fare.
But, in large part because of my wife and eating Mexican food, my desire to try other foods and see other places has expanded greatly. If only flying anywhere didn't involve walking through scanners and the occasional other security check, I'd be set. Really don't like those things, but if you're going to fly somewhere, they're almost unavoidable.
