You Can Choose Your Friends, But You Can't Choose Your Nickname

So, Choose Your Friends Wisely

Ah, nicknames. Just like the name on your birth certificate, you don't get to choose how others will refer to you. It's left to them. But if a name sticks, it can be with you throughout your entire life.

Here's to you, Sparky!

What's In A Name? Apparently, A Nickname

I've had quite a few nicknames throughout my life. Mainly, because my first name, Glen, lends itself to it. Being one syllable, and showing up as part of other names, I've had different people, mainly when I was younger, calling me:

  • Glendale (as in California, which I'd never been to by this time and neither had anyone else)
  • Glenny (my Grandma A used to call me this, but not so much to my face. Not sure why. She could get away with it. :) )
  • Glen Glen—Don't remember where this one came from, but I believe it was when I was a toddler or thereabouts.
  • Glenda (as in the good witch, since I was generally considered a good guy—the minds of 11-year-olds)
  • Glenny-the-Pooh (so, so clever)

Glenny-the-Pooh, Glenny-the-Pooh, tubby little wubby all stuffed with food...

I could go on, but you get the picture. Fortunately, none of those nicknames stuck.

Kids These Days

Later in life, nicknames sprung up for other reasons. There was a rather annoying period of time roughly eight years ago that my sons began to call me "Bald Eagle." In fact, one of them set up their phone to show an actual bald eagle, with Bald Eagle over the top and a ringtone of an eagle's cry any time I would call him.

That's me. Looking to the future.

The nickname, of course, derives from the fact that I am predominantly bald. I am also American, and the bald eagle is the national bird and shows up on emblems, shields, money, etc. The bald eagle is kind of stern looking, which was pretty much me trying to get my sons to tow the line. It's also a symbol of American pride and patriotism, of which I've spent some time trying to instill into them.

However, it was mostly to make fun of me. I don't think I have any significant qualities of a bald eagle at all.

Thankfully, they've grown out of it, but they still think it's funny.

Finally Nicknames I Like

My favorite nickname of all time, or pet name in this case, is Amor. That's what my wife calls me (when she's not mad at me).

She is originally from Mexico, so the nickname is Spanish and means Love. Sometimes she'll say, "Mi Amor" or my love.

Our wedding day, back when I had hair.

I'm grateful for this because similar pet names like Babe, Honey or Dear have never really resonated with me. (Amor does.) I know those are popular, so I won't say anymore. Ya'll can nickname each other whatever the heck you like.

In return, I either call her Niña or Chiquita. Those terms are also Spanish and mean Girl and Little Girl, respectively. She's several years older than me, and I didn't meet her until she was in her late 20s. So it's not that I've known her since she was really young, or even think of her in terms of a little girl or being naive. She's not. It's primarily because she's short (4' 9"), still very much cute and still very youthful when it comes to doing things and talking. She's got more energy than me and most people her age.

Whereas I like her nickname for me, she isn't that thrilled with the ones I've picked out.

Meh. No Thanks

Then, of course, she can call me Papa, Gordo, and Osito Panda, too, which mean Dad, Fatso and Panda Bear. Yeah, not so much.

Gordo, along with Flaco (skinny or thin) and other words like Vieja or Viejo (Old Woman, Old Man) are all considered terms of endearment. Personally, I don't see it, but to each their own.

I love you, old woman. I love you, too, old man.

It Is Pretty Cute

Lately, I've been called Abuelo (Grandfather), Grandpa and Pa Pa (which you have to pronounce like you're puffing out air). The joys of having a grand daughter. I'll probably have more nicknames before she's done with me.

Put On Your Thinking Caps

There are three other nicknames I'd like to mention, but instead of telling you now how I got them, I'd like to see if you can guess what they mean and how they were bestowed upon me. If you can't guess, make something up.

Riddle me this! What has three eyes and flies?

Feel free to talk about any nicknames you care to divulge, too. Make sure to explain how you got them, though. That's where the fun in all of this is.

I'll provide the answers in a reply to the first one who comments, and then refer subsequent guesses to it, so everyone who wants to know can find out.

My Three Nicknames

  1. SMOKEY—I got this during my junior year in high school, sometime during the winter to early spring.

  2. KOZ—this is one of two (see below) nicknames I had the year I went to Brigham Young University (Yes, I only went one year).

  3. FRIZZ—I'm not sure of the spelling here, but that's how it sounds. This also came during my time at BYU.

Okay, have at it. I'll be eagerly awaiting your guesses in the comments.

Interesting post @glenalbrethsen. Thanks for the insights into you life.

Now let me see . . .

Smokey because you looked a bit like Burt Reynolds? Although I have no idea how old you would have been in your junior year in High school. Probably too young to look like Burt Reynolds. 😂

Koz because . . . don't know.

Frizz because you loved to play frisbie.

i think you might have to give us some clues. 😂

There certainly are tales to be told behind the nicknames. The insights help to fill in the gaps.

Yeah, I've never looked like Burt Reynolds. I have seen Smokey and the Bandit, though. But that's not it!

Koz—well, you're in good company. This might be the toughest of them all because it's pretty specific to the time and place I was at the time.

Frizz—ding ding ding ding! First one to get this one correctly, so now your comment sits at the top of the heap. I'll give some more details when/if I need to explain the other two.

How about you? Any nicknames you care to share? 😬

Yay. Woo hoo! I made it to the top (said in a sing song childish voice). 😁

So give me a clue about the time. I'm just a poor Brit who has no idea about the American education system so don't even know what sort of age you would have been. Oh hang on. I'm getting mixed up that specific time and place was a university one so you must have been about eighteen. Assuming you leave school the same time as we do.

It's the junior year in High School I have no idea about.

So, in the early winter or spring of my Junior year, I would have been 16, with a birthday coming that summer. I was 17 when I graduated high school, but quickly turned 18 (born in the latter part of June), and so would have still been 18 when I headed to college for fall semester.

I'm not remembering now if the Koz nickname and Frizz nickname happened right around the same time or not. They could have. The Koz nickname was definitely in the fall, though.

So did you have to dress up as the Brigham Young University mascot, Cosmo the Cougar, for some sport that takes place in the Fall? 😂

That's the most awesome guess for Koz yet. Shows either you have some knowledge of BYU or got some via Google. I like it. I like it a lot. Sadly, though, me and Cosmo never crossed paths, in or out of the costume. (That I know of). Dressing up as Cosmo at that time in my life would have been really fun, though, even if I didn't and still don't dance. :)

The sport in the fall idea is a good one, if you choose to pursue that thought. :)

I love your guess on the Smokey @gillianpearce!!

You have to be of a certain age to understand I would think @lynncoyle1. It was the first thing that came to mind. That and Smokey Robinson which, for obvious reasons, was less likely to be it! 😂

Glen, this is a very good post! I like it.. I don't know if curie will like it, but to me it is cool to find out about you through your nicknames...

Smokey because you liked to light fires?
Koz because you were also tell people "because..."
Frizz because you liked it cold and always kept the temperature high?

My nicknames I liked have been Cap (on my college baseball team) and Coach (on frat football team I coached)...

One I didn't like in high school was bullet because I was so slow. :)

Curie hasn't come calling on it, so probably not. Them's the breaks.

Lighting fires is cool, in a legal and controlled setting, but no, that's not it.

I'm not really fond of telling people "Because" unless you're saying I followed it up with a big long explanation. :) That's not it either.

I'm not into cold very much, unless it's hot, and then it's refreshing. Nice try, though.

Cap, eh? What college did you play for?

I fully understand the bullet. I'm surprised they didn't call you 'slug' if you were slow, as it has a similar meaning as bullet, but with a slow connotation. Oh, well, you can't pick the English brilliance of your friends, either, although bullet is cooler than slug.

I played basketball in high school, and I always joked that while some teams could say that they were short but fast, or slow but tall, that our team was short but slow. :)

haha... yes slug would've been more appropriate but you're right... not the smartest bulbs in my school! I played for Rollins College in Winter Park, FL. That was way back in the day!

Sorry I didn't get any of them, but I am interested in seeing where they came from!

And yes curie didn't make it, but it is their mistake on this one! Great post, lots of fun!

hahaha 'lighting fires' ?? That's the best you could come up with hey?:)

I always wanted that nickname because i am a firebug... so I was actually thinking, damn what a cool nickname! :P

This is a really sweet post! Even the part about yours sons and the bald eagle; I had to laugh, thinking of the eagle's scream every time the phone rang. I'm sorry, but that's pretty hilarious.

I love the Spanish nicknames too. Mi amor, sounds so beautiful to me, in fact, I've begun using it since being here. Our cat Buddy, seems to put weight on daily, and I affectionately call him Gordo all the time too ;)

Your love for your family shines through whenever you write about them...it is a beautiful thing to see!

Well, it is pretty funny, but I can't let them know that I think so, too, because that only encourages them to come up with something else even less flattering. It never goes in the complimentary direction, see.

Spanish is a romance language so all kinds of things sound better. You would never name a town Rat's Mouth (Boca Raton) except in Spanish.

I'm glad it comes through since I usually cop out and don't even try to express feelings to any great extent. Most of it seems inadequate, especially when I can always do more to show it.

Male and introverted. Not the best of combinations when it comes to any kind of expressions of love. :)

I think you got Smokey because you thought it was cool that you could see your breath. I think Koz is like cuz, but not. And Frizz is because your hair went out in a blaze of glory!

You said one of your nicknames was Osito Panda. Wouldn't that be Little Panda Bear? Oso is bear, so wouldn't osito be little panda?

Yeah. Osito is diminutive, but that's not how she means it. :)

As far as your guesses go, good try, but no. I was wondering how long it might take for some to relate frizz to hair, as in frizzy.

Do you think @lynncoyle1, @gillianpearce, @pjau or @davemccoy might be able to figure it out? :) Anyone else you know who's good at this kind of thing.

Was kind of hoping for some more comments on this one.

Now that I see this Glen, I didn't even get a notification from ginabot! There was a day when I know I wasn't getting all of my notifications so, do you know what?? We can both blame her for me missing out on this one!! :)

Well, at least I tried. Since I don't think there's much of a common posting time where everyone will see things, I resorted to tagging everyone who I thought might be entertained by my nickname tomfoolery.

Of course, that plan only succeeds if Ginabot is functioning.

I noticed the same thing on my end of Ginabot, too. It's been corresponding with the hiccups on Steemit. So, I'm not sure if it's her to blame, or the monkeying around the devs are supposed to be doing under the hood with something. At any rate, I hope all of that is working itself out, even though I just checked my Steemit wallet and it's back to giving me an error page.

People always called me by my last name. I think that's a pretty common thing in the UK. Not sure about other countries.

Oh, it's pretty common here, too. In my case, not so much because Albrethsen is not an easy name to pronounce, simply because the 'th' and the 's' being next to one another and similar but different in sound slows everyone down. :)

But it's prevalent throughout all levels of sports, working environments (mostly among males), and so forth. I know most of our newspapers and literature use last names mostly, too, so there's a huge precedent for just using the last name, or some derivative of it.

After reading the article I do have one open question: how does your wife call you when she is mad at you?

Well, generally, when she's mad or just serious, she calls me by my first name, Glen.

My mom, when she was unhappy with any of us, would call us by our entire names. My wife likes short and to the point. :)

No guesses on how I got my nickname? No nicknames you'd like to share? :)

Don't really had nicknames! My wife calls me "bolleke" sometimes, which is hard to translate. Don't ask me why.
Let's see if I can come close:
Smokey: 2 options, or you did smoke back then or you really likes smoked meat? Let's try a third possibility: your hair, which you had back then, did fumes back in those days, when going into the cold, maybe after a shower?
Koz: Maybe comes from cousin.
Frizz: No idea! Really hard to do an educated guess!

well writting..
you are so creative..
i wanna take a new name for my nephew..just paseed 3 month..looks so cute..female..

so any suggestion??
