Anyone who read this story that I posted a while ago - I have an update.
For anyone who haven't...please go read it before you continue.
The update is below the blank space!
You read this right?? OK good...go ahead...read below.
He came back to the hospital with another fever. Last time the Big Name Tertiary Center Hospital had replaced his infected heart valve. This time he again had Staph Aureus in his blood. This time though, I didn't beat around the bush.
Me: Did you start shooting again? His mother and girlfriend were sitting there.
Him: Nah man!
Me: Please don't BS me...I need to transfer you to Big Name Tertiary Center Hospital again if you have.
Him: Why? I might need a new valve again?
Me: No...this time they will not trust you with a new valve, nor will they trust you with a long term IV line out of the hospital for your antibiotics.
Him: What do you mean?
Me: You are going to have to go to the hospital everyday to get your IV antibiotics because they will expect you to shoot your heroin through the permanent IV access - if they gave it to you.
Him: Man are you kidding me? Big Name Tertiary Center Hospital is like an hour away from where I live!
Me: So, you did start shooting again?
Him: Yes...yes I did.
Me: Yea and you can forget about any surgeon giving you a second valve after you wasted your first one away.
Him: You telling me I am done?
Me: All I can say is, hope that the IV antibiotics cure your problem because you basically wasted away your second chance at life.
I went out called the surgeon at Big Name Tertiary Center who then proceed to yell and scream at this kids' idiocy. I had to convince him to accept the transfer because initially the response was "forget it!"
His mother thanked me when he was being wheeled away. I just said good luck.
Can't win em all.
