In Memory of My Grandfather Merle Milliman

in life •  8 years ago

This am My Mom Skyped Me to Let Me Know My Grandfather Merle Milliman Had Passed Away.

Early this morning my Step Dad visited my Grandfather to check on him. When he opened the door he found him slumped over at the kitchen table with a bag of bird seed. You see my Grandfather loved nature and one of his favorite pass times was feeding the birds.

About a year and a half ago my Grandmother passed away. I felt bad for him as I know he was alone. The great thing is that my parents and my Uncles lived nearby so they frequently visited him. He recently let my Mom know that he was ready to go. Sad as it is I am actually relieved for him.

My Grandfather was a guy that kept fighting through life, never giving up. He survived a heart attack when I was in high school which prompted him to give up smoking and drinking.

He loved to hunt and fish. The guy absolutely loved the outdoors. My best memories with him are when he would take my brother and I fishing on the Erie Canal. We would sit there catching nothing but just spending time with us was priceless.

The History of Merle Milliman.

He grew up on the Southern Tier of New York from a town called Leon. This area is very rural and is well known to be Amish country. Growing up on the farm he learned how to work with his hands. After graduating high school he joined the US Marines and served a few years here in Panama guarding ships as they passed through the Panama Canal.

Me Mimicking His Picture.

He Was an Absolute Character!

When I told him I was moving to Panama he said, "You better make sure your girlfriend is not related to you, she might be your cousin!" As you can imagine my Grandmother gave him the look of death. Every time I talked to him over the last six years he reminded me.

One time I showed him a picture of my condo here in Panama and the view from my balcony. He said, "there is no way in hell that is Panama, they don't have glass there". He was right, during the 1950's the glass in Panama was a luxury.

This was the Picture from My Balcony.

Of course I wish I could have seen him one more time. I think most of us feel that way when someone we love passes away. I hope he finally has that peace he has been searching for his entire life. Thank you for being there for us when we were young Grandpa.

Thank you, I appreciate it very much.

I'm sorry to hear your sad news. It's very nice to hear about some of your happy memories. You made me think of my grandad.

If it was not for the happy times I think it would be much more difficult to take.

Sorry to hear the news, I hope you are doing ok. Stay strong and Steem on brother.

I think I will cut it short online and get out of the house. ; )

Sorry to hear about your loss, but it sounds like he had a big impact on your life and that he had a full one for himself! My condolences...

He sure did, when my Moms life was difficult they were there for all of us.

Beautiful write up. Sorry for your loss.

What a way to close 2016. I hope we all have an amazing 2017.

I send my deepest condolences. Thank you for sharing that personal story- Your grandpa sounds like he was quite a character! The bit about Panama relatives really got me giggling. always good to remember through laughter than sadness! Great way to remember/honor a great man!
UPVOTED AND RESTEEMED

Yup, he made me smile and laugh many times throughout my life. Even though I am sad inside the relief is tremendous because I know he was having a tough time with the loss of my Grandmother.

Totally, its definitely hard to let go and deal with, but like you said, there was a relief to his suffering from that loss. They are together again in a beautiful place! (I am not religious, but spiritual. I believe we all move on to a better place.)

I am sorry for your loss man. My grandparents basically all passed away decades ago but for one. My mom died in 2000 and my dad the last to go the same year as his mom nearly 3 yrs ago now so in a way, you were lucky to have him living as long as you did!

I am glad you had him around for as long as you did.

I would have loved to meet him, seeing as he was the outdoors type. I think he was quietly really happy you ended up with some glass in the end LOL.

Thoughts are with you and your family. If I was closer and more able - I would go to NYS and pay my respects with your mom and family.

I have my Step Fathers Mom remaining. She is rock solid and is still going strong. He was an awesome Grandfather. Thank you for stopping by.

You are welcome. Other than being my friend, this hit close to home and that is why I shared what I did.

If you end up back in NYS for this, you know where I am. We can pizza.

IDK any place here that takes Bitcoin for pizza payments though LOL---- have a good end to your week RH

Sorry for your loss brother, your fam at Steem has your back for life. I know what its like to lose a grandparent - keep your head up friend. Upvoted, great post.

Awhhhhhhhhh Son, that was a sweet tribute to your Grandfather. Thank you, he always considered you the rebel in the family. I think he was jealous of you deep down inside. Maybe he missed his girlfriends in Panama..... Ya think?

Sorry for your loss.
The bodies die, but love is for ever.

Sending light and love to you and your family~*~

I'm sorry about your grandfather. He sounds like a great man.
