Introducing Manoj Bhargava. Manoj is why the World needs more Billionaires!!

in life •  9 years ago  (edited)

Steemit is a great platform to highlight and support the future hero’s of our generation. In the future, I hope to see Manoj Bhargava’s name next to the likes of Martin Luther King and Nelson Mandela as a man who changed the world. If we see that, he would have been successful in eradicating poverty worldwide.

Quote: ’If your given more, more should be expected of you’

More Billionaires, More inequality?! How can that be a good thing?

Billionaires can (and are) doing things that transcend inequality, they can push the human race forwards by investing there vast wealth in a way that any government would be envious. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation are aiming to do just that by supporting ‘partners to deliver proven tools—including vaccines, drugs, and diagnostics—as well as discover pathbreaking new solutions that are affordable and reliable.”

Poverty is a problem which isn’t going away anytime soon. Almost everyone would agree that poverty (in it’s simplest form) is based around 2 key factors;

  1. Access to Clean Drinking (and Agricultural) Water: Well over 90% of illness worldwide is caused by drinking un-sanitary water. Along with that, Agricultural Water needs to be very low in Salt, much lower than drinking water. Water is the solution to illness and food depravity worldwide.
  2. Access to (Energy) Electricity. It has been estimated that around 1bn people don’t have access to Electricity. Imagine if these people had the means to access the internet,.. This would allow people to educate themselves out of poverty in many ways…

Manoj Bhargava is the Billionaire inventor behind ‘5 Hour Energy Shot’. With a net worth around $4.5bn, he literally has ‘Billions in Change’. But ‘Change’ is the significant word here. Manoj Bhargava has decided to try and ‘Change’ the world for the better by giving away 99% of his fortune.

Now, you might be thinking, ‘So what, just another Billionaire giving away all his money’, well not quiet…

Rather than give his money away passively to multiple philanthropic projects, he thinks he can do a better job himself. He quiet astutely put it, backing multiple small projects trying to change the world is like ‘throwing sand in the ocean’. He has a lot of sand, so has decided to invest his money, and manage his own project to (amongst other things) give the world clean drinking water, and limitless energy by invention..

The Inventions

Free Cycle:

Simply put, this is a static hybrid bicycle which, if cycled for 1hr, produces enough energy for a third world household for 24hrs. Completely clean off grid energy.

The Rainmaker:

‘There is water everywhere, but not a drop to drink’. The ‘Rain Project’ an invention which turns sea water into drinking water (well in fact any type of water, up to and including medical grade), by an industrial process that mimic the creation of Rain. This video can show you more than I can say...

Many of us imagine (strive for) a utopian world free of human suffering and with equality at it’s core. Well, first of all, that can’t happen until problems based around clean drinking water and cheap energy are solved. I would further put it to you, that the world being equal would halt human progress. Having capital in the hands of societies innovators is something which is essential for civilsations to move forward.

So if you want to change the world, maybe aspire to be a Billionaire…

A few supplementary bits...

Background:
Manoj was born in India before moving to the US at an early age. After attending Princeton university, he left after one year before returning to india and living the life of a buddhist monk for 12 years. On his return, some years passed before 5hr Energy Shot came along. His formative years certainly had an impact on him, I would highly recommend watching the following youtube video's if you want to know more...

We in richer part of world often neglect basic things like electricity and water. Most of people don't know how sewer system works or how water flows to our houses. Truth is that biggest part of the world is still poor and those doing good don't know how blessed they are.
This man knows what is needed since he comes from there and its marvelous how he aspires to help less fortunate ones after he succeded.
One man that I admire is Jack Ma owner of Alibaba.com and Aliexpress.com. He often talks about his responsability which is part of his fortune and wealth.
Its in a way like steemit since responsibility of those who own most of steem will affect us all. If they are wise in their power and humble we will prosper as whole and if they make bad decisions we all suffer.

I think that if you look at Maslow's hierarchy of needs the billionaires you mentioned already made it to the top with Self-actualization, but even Maslow criticized himself and added another layer on top of "Self-transcendence" which states that : "The self only finds its actualization in giving itself to some higher goal outside oneself, in altruism and spirituality". That is where you find those billionaiers now like Manoj and Bill Gates trying to help the world through innovation.

Agreed. If we were real what means all of the world wealth to you if u had it. It means nothing but number, after you cover your basic needs. By giving one gets more in return, by helping we grow as human beings and that is what all of us should do, help others. Because by helping everything around us becomes better and we prosper from that.
Ideas that those people promote is a way to next era of human civilization and i hope that we get there.

Interesting you brought up Jack Ma, I was reading the other day about the corporate responsibilities he set for Alibaba, and it goes something like this (off the top of my head);

Hierarchy

Customers come first,
Staff come next,
Shareholders last.

And I believe he also want 50% of profits to be paid out to Staff members, regardless of how big that number might be. Definitely a guy to watch for the now and the future. I also think that is the way business should be run, everyone benefiting.

Your Steemit point is also good. I believe we have seen the 'former' of them so far. But we can wait and see what will unfold from here on out...

And stern it will help facilitate helping out the poorest of nations as well...No transaction fees...A level playing field for content creation...Its a new era!

@steemit-life Exactly, and great point. This is why this is a great place to talk about topics and people like this. The Blockchain can have a massive impact on the poorest people, as long as Manoj and others do their part first...

I would love a simple way to be able to reach out to certain people and just show them a 10 minute version of steemit that will blow their minds. Its not easy though without the connections.

But in time they will be queuing for a steem signup don't worry, they already are. ;)

That's the genius of the 'Billions in Change' video. @dan @ned take notice. In fact, @everyone take notice. When Steemit.com is ready for the number, If we can create video based around how Steemit is going to impact the world for the better, that would certainly help the cause...

I think you might be onto something here, there's definitely the potential for Steemit to grow into something like this in the future. There are parallels between some of the founders philosophies and Manoj Bhargava. We'll see..

@wingz Ever the optimist. I like it!

I had seen a VICE documentary about the water problems around the world ( California, Brazil etc.) and was worried, than a day after watched the documentary you linked above and had seen a great solution, we just need practical leaders to use those new inventions.
I also wander at what stage is the extracting energy from earth's core is at because I was kinda skeptical.

Also, completely agree with you re: It's down to having practical leaders to use the inventions... That is one thing that consistently stands in the way of people trying to do good

@ooak That idea is amazing, but thought I might put people off with leading with it ;) Theoretically possible for sure. I remember reading about a bunch of different teams racing to 'dig' the worlds biggest hole (maybe in the 60s 70s).

Anyway, I think it ended up with one of them going so deep their drill melted (I'm not sure, I will confirm this later). Anyway, the Energy is there, We can dig a hole deep enough, Graphene is a wonder material, but Graphene is no where near ready. I think it is a very long way off. That really would be a game changer...

Did they intend to use graphene in the driller as well or just in the conductive wires?
also I wanted to free some time to research the benefits of the exterior blood pump but forgot, i will go ahead now.

@ooak Thanks for that. Medicine is beginning to move in a different direction.

Most new Cancer breakthroughs are based on (in simple terms) immuno therapy, essentially trying to make you so healthy your body kills the cancer cells, rather than blasting people with radiation that kills Cancer cell Quicker than normal cells.

I like Manoj's comments on Experts (loosely)...

"Experts know everything that was... But have no idea what will be.."

yeah the expert quote was very funny and smart at the same time.
in healthcare there seems to be some kind of a closed clan where new thinking on stuff is hard to breach, they need to preserve their monopoly on healthcare somehow.

On the blood pump: Please check in when you are done @ooak

I'm sure they would need to look at using Graphene for the drill too. I've invested in a few graphene based companies, no one is anywhere near being able to use Graphene on that scale as far as I am aware...

It's called "external counterpulsation" Most of the research I had seen where conducted upon patient with heart problem and they showed improvements. I don't see why it can't improve healthy people as well.
I liked the explaintion by the Dr. in the movie where he used terms from the "Salutogenesis" approach coined by Aaron Antonovsky which looks at humans health not as a either healthy or sick but rather a scale of well being you always moving on this scale and healthcare should always treat humans to help them get closer to the healthy polar. using this "external counterpulsation" as a weekly/monthly treatment even for healthy people can be good.
