We Finally Know How Many Amazon Prime Subscribers Exist: 100 Million

Despite being one of the largest publicly traded companies in the world, Amazon keeps a lot of internal metrics close to Jeff Bezos’s zip-up vest. For instance, nobody outside the company knows concretely how much hardware Amazon moves and how many Kindles and Echos are out there in the wild. The company has also famously kept a lid on just how many people pay for Amazon Prime and the dangerous convenience of free two-day shipping.

But in a new letter to shareholders, Jeff Bezos finally gave up the stat:

13 years post-launch, we have exceeded 100 million paid Prime members globally. In 2017 Amazon shipped more than five billion items with Prime worldwide, and more new members joined Prime than in any previous year – both worldwide and in the U.S.
One-hundred million! Paying members! Christ! Here’s some back of the envelope math: 100 million members x $100 = $10 billion, recurring annually (the price of Prime may be lower in non-U.S. regions). That’s a lot of money Amazon is raking in for the privilege of $4 one-day shipping and eight episodes of I Love Dick. Now tell us how many Kindles there are, Jeff.
