A unconditional basic income - can it change our style of living?

What is the unconditional basic income?

The unconditional basic income (UBI) is an financial concept that grant every citizen of a state a specified amount of money every day, as stated without conditions. The UBI is money that is taken from the fiscal surplus, and it's detached from any other income.

The UBI differs from a partial basic income, this satisfy only a person's basic need, e.g. food or clothing and prevents the person get under the poverty line.

Why should there be an UBI?

There are two basical approachs for an UBI:

  • The first is about humanitarian causes: The humantarian justification of an UBI is seen in the fact that it enables every human being to live a dignified life, apart from social exclusion through poverty ot too less money for medicine.
  • Second there are economic causes: Looking to the economy aspects, this approach argues that more than half of the people in the modern and present welfare society already depends on the income of others or on social benefits. Giving an UBI would mean that every person get a possibility to live in a way of financial independence.

Realistic models of funding

The first realistic model of funding is the taxation of consumption through the VAT (value added tax), the second possibilty is a taxation of monetary transactions with one or two percent of every transaction (the payment transactions are more than 200 times higher than the gross domestic product of many countries) or finally the taxation of income beside the UBI.

Now the exciting question: Can the UBI change our lifestyle?

The answer is: Yes

Some pilot projects (e.g. the pilot project of the finnish government or the crwod-funding campaign mein-grundeinkommen.de) have shown that people with an UBI are living more relaxed, are more creative and productive. Also they are more motivated to seek for jobs.

Of course not everyone would handle the right way with the UBI. There are black sheeps every time. But the most people would be thankful and honest.

And I can tell you a question that shows you the need for an UBI:

What if you were poor? Would you reject that money which helps you to survive?

Within the next couple of decades, we'll have robots and computers replacing people in vast numbers. Some countries already now see this coming, and are experimenting with UBI. Finland is one such example.

Canada also had a similar experiment in the 70's if I recall correctly.

Yes, you're right. They have an social experiment from 1974 to 1978.

By the way: the canadian government plans an similar project this year until 2020 :)

Humanitarian and best for economics, seem like great reasons for UBI. Neither fits in with the current geo political climate. This will be interesting. Thanks for the thoughtful post.

Thanks :) Yes, you're right. But the way will be long, because many people are scared about changes...

There is so much good, and caring in the world. It's easy to forget the best of human nature. There's a good chance it will prevail. Thank you for your reply. Peace.
