Consistency is the key to success.

I am a trainer at my restaurant.

Today I had two very different trainees.

One of them was an older lady that had been working at restaurants for quite some time.

She knew all the in and outs of the business but she said these past months she's only averaged about $20 to $30 a night on her tables.

That's not enough for anyone in this world to get by.

She was hoping to have better luck at this restaurant and I think that she probably will. That is assuming she does everything the right way.

The other trainee was a younger gentleman who apparently already knew everything that there was to know about anything.

He was very cocky and arrogant and he always seemed to want to be right no matter what.

Having trained several hundreds of employees in my time here at this restaurant I already know in my mind how they're going to work out.

Marlene is going to do pretty well.

Joshua is going to have a much harder time.

Sometimes people ask me how you go up through the ranks and become a higher ranked server.

I always tell them that there are several key ingredients to success in the restaurant industry.

Consistency really matters.

That's why if you want to go up in the rankings you need to make sure that you get to work about 15 to 30 minutes earlier than you're supposed to be there.

As soon as you get to work you need to be ready to work and not ready to check websites on your telephone and text people and mess around.

If there's food that needs to be taken out the tables and you can't find any of the other servers then you just need to do it yourself...... even if you're the only one that's doing it.

If there are cold drinks sitting in the window and somebody is thirsty than you need to take those drinks to their table even if it's not your own table.

These things get noticed.

These things make people want to come in and ask for you to wait on them.

If you're always on time or a little bit early then that will definitely be a huge factor in going up in the ranks.

If you're never on time or maybe you're sometimes on time and sometimes late then nobody knows that they can completely trust you.

If you can't be trusted then how can you possibly expect to go up in the rankings?

There are many other aspects of life where consistency is extremely important as well.

If you're always late to pick up your kid from school then they're going to expect that you're going to be late. That's not very nice is it? Be on time. Be consistent.

If you're always late to meet your parents for lunch then they're not going to expect that you're going to be on time. It's not cool and it's not consistent.

If you're late for work then nobody's going to give you more responsibility. You have to be better than that. You have to be consistent.

I've been working in the restaurant business for over 11 years now and I can tell you with absolute confidence......

Consistency is the key to success.

To quote the head coach of the college football team I root for, "Be consistently good, not occasionally great."

Consistency & Punctuality! The two pillars to success in any industry! I think that both of these traits are indicators of being discplined which (in my opinion) is more important than anything else!

Without discipline you'll never follow through on any of your dreams/goals/desires. Discipline is an attribute that needs to be trained and obtained over time. Nobody is 100% disciplined all the time but the more you hold yourself accountable, the easier it'll be next time.

I can't agree more with your sentiments about success in the service industry. One of my biggest pet-peeves is co-workers who only look out for themselves and don't think about the restaurant staff as being on the same team. Just like consistency, punctuality, and discipline are pillars of success...selfishness and laziness sure paths to failure!

Indeed it's true , though i have failed multiple time what saved me was the attitude to never give up.

Completely agree!
Consistency and be always on Time is basic for your success! BTW not to complain eather, there is always way to quit if you don’t like it.

The consistency is a key to everything, not only to business. I was working in a few branches, one was tourism. Yes, it was good, it was great but some people failed to realize that that customers acknowledge the effort too, especially when they expect it. It doesn't need to work every time, but the humans are subjective and they will always look after the person who stands out in something, either it is a communication, good will, speed or anything else they expect to see. A person can be a master technical bartender, but if he fails to recognize the expectation, all the rest goes unnoticed.

I really enjoyed reading this post I actually have been serving for sometime no in the east coast of the states . But I recently got fired hahah. I may blog about it . It's a funny story ! What I valued about this post is how applicable it can be to other areas of life . Thanks
