A few years back I was working out at my gym and I was writing down each of my lifts in my notebook and calculating how much weight each set would be as a % of my training max.
.....Didn't quite follow that?
That's ok! If you don't generally have a special interest in training then there is no reason for you to know what a 'training max' is, or why you would be using any sort of maths.
I stopped and stared around at all of the powerlifters and bodybuilders that make one of the strongest gyms in Canada, Fortis Fitness, so unique. It was fascinating to know that they all approach their training from an incredibly calculated and strategic standpoint, just as I was in that moment. I couldn't help but wonder what would happen if we put that same deliberate effort into our daily lives.... How much would our lives change?
That's a tough question and one worth devoting some time to think about. Although it would be very hard to calculate your net life improvement, there is no doubt that if we all lived our lives more deliberately and less by circumstance we would experience a gain in quality of life.
Although there are not the exact formulas for this like there is in weightlifting, we can begin living more deliberately by first analyzing our current daily lives. Begin to 'cut the fat' and discover if a lot of the situations you find yourself in or the tasks you are lending your time to are worth it. What you will probably find is that a lot of the things in your day are relatively trivial.
It's important to be honest with yourself when reviewing your day-to-day life in what really holds priority and if it is truly important. Most people are unable to do this. If you are able to be completely honest with yourself, you're what we call a 'Truth Seeker' because you are able to overcome the emotional pain of accepting reality.
An easy way to cut out useless time-wasting activities is to ask yourself a simple question:
Does this task take me forward, or backward?
If the answer is not a 100% resounding "FORWARD!", cut it out. In addition to eliminating useless time-wasting is the addition of deliberate tasks that benefit us. By identifying things that take us forward, we can begin to deliberately start incorporating them into our daily life. At this point, you probably don't have habits built to do them all, so just start with one.
This leads me to my overall point: Always have a reason for doing what you're doing
You will never see anyone skilled do anything unnecessary in their training, so why would it be any different for life? Do you think your life will improve by floating through it and letting the random circumstances shape who you are and guide you? It won't.
Always have a reason for doing what you're doing.
Often times we're not giving up money when we live by circumstance, but we are giving up our time, and that is far more important.
Lastly, your life will be improving but you also need to make sure you are happy. Doing activities that make you happy is as good as doing something for any other reason and can certainly be classified as an activity that takes you forward. Make a list of things that make you happy, and ensure that you begin incorporating them into your life.
Sometimes the easiest thing to do is just to write it down on paper or the computer and make it real. You can improve your life, but it won't happen by doing the same things that got you where you are today.
