I Want It My Way

I like having things my way. Especially at work. Everything in order, clean and organized.

I recently got a new coworker and even though they are good workers with excellent laboratory skills, I can't help myself but feel like my system is not perfect anymore. My new coworker is not as precise as I am and all I want to do is tell them to do things differently - better!

I know. I should relax. Or let it go.

You are probably not wrong to assume I am a bit of a nitpicker.

After five months at my new job, I was finally able to establish a harmonic working environment through little changes so my other coworkers would have time to adapt to (there were only improvements in my opinion). I mostly cleaned never touched hidden spots and threw away things people haven't used for years. Everyone I asked about the updates seemed to be okay with them (hopefully for real) and the life was good.

Now my equilibrium has shifted towards higher entropy and I am not sure how to handle it.

I understand that every person brings a specific amount of disorder with them but to me, that is hard to accept. Expecting too much is never a good thing (except if you are a manager or supervisor) and maybe this is exactly my problem.

A good thing in my case is, that the new coworker is very nice and hopefully with more and more communication I can elevate the 'sense of caring' in the months to come. I am optimistic but I feel it will be a great challenge for the both of us.

I hope you have a wonderful working environment and you are treated well and with respect. This is, after the fair paycheck, the most important thing when having a job.

Enjoy the day :)

@k4r1nn, I cannot express how much I relate to your post. I too love order, consistency, efficiency, and symmetry. Unfortunately not all (if any) individuals share such passions...let alone understand them. I am currently in the midst of a project where I must reconsider my expectations on a daily basis. Although it has been incredibly challenging, my soul knows that once it is all said and done I will have learned how to adapt to a variety of situations I could not have fathomed a month ago. Try to remember that we are all individuals, and therefore are likely used to seeing things from our own perspective. Which means, what may make all of the logical sense in the world to people like us, may very well be as foreign of a thought as a new language to others. This is not to say the ability to recalibrate isn't there...simply that it may require a LOT of consistency and perhaps even more patience;0) Thanks for your perfectly timed post.

Those purple bottles kind of look like they are housing some Halloween-like specimens. At first glance the one on the far left looks like it has bulging eyes, and the one second to right looks like a bat's head.

My imagination is going wild.

I think you have the right attitude for working in a lab!

Maybe you can stress the pride of being a true craftsman in your trade?

Most likely wont work but you got to try something LOL!

I agree, its good to try but without hurting them, yet the sentence : if every thing is in my way I can be flexible: literally means that this person is not flixeble

Theres no fault in getting things organized to your taste. But from also from a new employee perspective, slight remarks do leave impressions, you can help him/her feel adapting by giving positive remark

working in our own way is satisfying
