GET AWAY FROM THE TV! It's Killing you!

Recently, a 25-year-old American made his mark in the Guinness Book of Records for the most hours spent watching TV. He spent 94 hours watching the electronic box before sleep deprivation took effect. That’s 4 days straight watching TV without a bathroom break or even sleeping.
You can already tell that’s not good for your health, right? Well, it is, and you spend a considerable amount of your time watching TV. Studies show that the average American adult spends as much as 20 hours a week watching TV. In a month, you’ll have surpassed the Guinness record set by the 25-year-old.

Herein are three reasons why you shouldn’t spend so much time in front of the box.

-Ruins Your Social Life

Spending all that time watching TV dumps you out of your social circles. Those 20 hours you spend every week would have been put to better use reconnecting with friends, spending quality time with your loved ones, and doing things you love. You know, like your hobbies.
After getting three seasons of The Game of Throne on disk, you will probably spend less time connecting to other humans. You will be stuck in your little world, devoid of any human contact. Because humans are social beings, spending so much time away from meaningful human interactions negatively affects you emotionally and mentally. Spending all of your time watching TV is a sure way of uprooting yourself from human consciousness.

Plus those TV shows teach you all the wrong things about human interactions. The imagery TV shows today portray about human relationships will mislead you. If you don’t think this is true, just look at how the TV portrays women. Then ask yourself how you think of women. See the connection? The TV will brainwash you until you cannot connect with a person on any level, apart from how the TV shows want you to connect.

- Kills Your Mental Capacity

Do you come out feeling smarter after watching a TV show? Most likely you don’t unless you are watching the History Channel. Unlike what the creators of TV shows want you to think, most of the shows are dumbed down so that everyone gets thrilled. That is, the producers of a television show use a 15-year-old as the baseline for creating most shows. Therefore, they dumb everything down to the level of a teenager. If you are above 20 years, almost every TV show out there won’t exercise your intelligence. That’s why after a movie ends; you go, “I saw that coming”. But because of the explosives and “R” rated scenes in the movie, your brain feels pretty much satisfied.

There are other numerous adverse effects of spending too much time watching TV. In fact, there are more cons than pros for watching TV. Take a break from the screen and experience other things life has to offer.

So true. I took up playing the giutar a few years ago even though I had had the desire to learn to play more than 40 years ago. Like most people I used to spend hours a day watching tv. Imagine how good I'd be at the instrument if I'd spent all those hours playing!

Aww, You should try to cut back slowly and slowly eliminate that. Focus on the guitar so you can be better at it.

Our cohort of parents, all with children under 6, do not let the kids watch TV. Most give them 1-2 hrs of Netflix programming on the weekends and that is it.

Relative to the kids that watch a lot of TV, the difference in social intelligence, imagination and values is astonishing. Our kids don't have Christmas lists - they aren't programmed to want a bunch of crap that the TV commercials have programmed them to want. It's wild. TV is awful. It's called programming for a reason.

Wow! That is amazing that your parents do that. I think it's a really good idea, If you let your kids rot in front of the TV it will become a habit, and eventually take over their life.

Exactly! People are programmed by the TV it's really sad

TV ruins your social life? What are you talking about?

Phoebe, Chandler, Monica, Rachel, Joey, Ross... I have plenty of friends ;)

Hahahahha I guess your right!!! TV friends. Hqha

I definitly love such posts :)

Trying to live consciously and effectively, I gave up TV a few years ago. And, you know, have benefited from this. It seems that we miss something important if we don't turn on the TV. Or it may seem that we can learn a lot through educational television. But this is an illusion, in my opinion.

I turn on the TV sometimes in order to find out the latest news or to get useful business information. And live without it in peace. Absolutely do not feel deprived of something important ;)

Thank you for this theme, @kaylinart, I fully support your position!

I really agree with you, It's an illusion. I mean worst case scenario, We can hear about it from our friends. Or hear about the news in other ways.

I'm glad you have gotten to the point where you don't feel deprived.

Definitely a good message to spend less time watching television. I feel like watching some isn't the worst thing in the world, but too much can definitely do a lot of harm to a person's well-being.

I agree :) Sometimes It's nice to watch TV after spending all day working on stuff. But yeah, 20 hours straight is absolutely crazy!
