When is it time to start writing a will?

Thoughts on leaving a will?Inspired by a soldier's letter.

Have you watched Descendant of the Sun ? ? ?

It is a Korean Drama that I recently watched about a soldier life, honor, and of course very complicated love life. If you are into chick flicks, this one is a must see. I cannot believe how much action is in this one too. Don't believe me, watch the first 10 minutes. I digress, the reason I bring this show up at all is that I didn't realize or forgot that soldier write a letter before going into battle to their loved ones.

If the soldier dies the letter is delivered to the families. I wonder if this is just in the movie or a real thing? Regardless, the idea stayed with me. Soldiers sign up to go to war but are given a moment to write their final words. If only we are so lucky. I don't live a dangerous lifestyle, but that isn't saying much. I am not guaranteed life. What if I did die heading to work and never told my family where my passwords were?! More importantly, what if I didn't get a chance to say goodbye.

A soldier's' letter

I should also mention that this letter is different than a will. The soldiers settle their assets and final wishes well before heading into battle. This letter is specifically for their family and friends. They can write as many as they like. At least I think so. I can't imagine writing too many. Then again, I think about my parent's age and start to wonder if it is too soon to have the talk with them. When is it to early to start talking about will and final wishes. We have joked about it before. Mom wants white balloons and died wants to buried in Brazil with his parents.

Do you have a will?

I hoped that at some point we could have this discussion. To be honest, after my grandparents died I thought my dad would write his will. His father waited a very long time.

It almost seemed like he waited to die until his will was finalized.

My parents, aside I wonder if I should write a just in case letter. Would that be considered to similar to a suicide letter? If not a letter, how do I tell them where they can access my Steemit account?

By the time they find it, they would be mega whales. Probably not, but still someone should know.

What are your thoughts on saying goodbye? Would you write a letter? Who would you write a letter to? If you were to suddenly disappear, what would you like done to your personal accounts?

I had a will written when I went travelling for a year. Depends how much money you have though I think. And if something important happens like marriage or divorce or kids, you should update it straight away.

Have you revisited it since that time?

Nah. I haven't added or deleted anyone so no need.

I think that someone should write a will when they start having substantial assets like a house or when they have their 1st child. I made my will when my son was a toddler. It's a rather simple one which gives most of my assets to my husband and if he predeceases me, my son.

That is a good point of reference. Many people suggested revisiting it when major life changes good or bad occur.

I think a lot of people find something confronting about wills because then you actually have to consider the fact that even if science somehow finds a cure for aging you still have a chance of dying and need to deal with this. My sister in law and her husband did one before they went on a round the world trip, and she found it pretty confronting. Everyone knew they would just be off having awesome fun times and come back with lots of stories and photos and that's precisely what happened, but I guess you never know for sure :)

Similarly I accidentally found my a copy of my parents' will (well it was just kind of sitting on the dining table, I guess they were either revising it or taking it to lawyers or something), they're in no danger of dying of natural causes anytime soon but they were on top of it, it was just a bit confronting for me because I never like thinking about these things consciously (I do a lot of it subconsciously).

My partner and I know each other's passwords to pretty much everything (I was going somewhere on my own once and suddenly turned around and said to him "you know how to get into my steem account and how to convert to fiat right?" and he looked all freaked out when I explained it to him, not because he wouldn't be able to understand or work out the process, but the poor bugger didn't want to think about why I wouldn't be there to do it XD). We actually should probably do proper ones but as he says, "I'm not intending on dying anytime soon" XD

My thoughts exactly. Even when writing one up when there is no immediate harm or threat to life brings emotions up as if there is. Now that you write that, maybe I need to have the bandaid mentality. Just rip it off and then its done and we can move on.

When you have something you really want make sure someone gets as your last action.

I don’t have much so I don’t stress over these kinds of things. They usually change quite a number of times. I doubt they cost that much these days so if you really want your last voice to say to be heard might as well.

People sometimes need to realize when creating one even if it’s painful could save a lot of issues in the future when that day arrives. Other times it’s not a big deal as long as there no one unexpected that could show up and try claim something. Most also just don’t want talk about it as it can be really reveling what they don’t want to say. Even more so when someone is not getting what they were expecting when that day comes.

I agree and I wonder if it really is as cheap as we think it is. Thankfully, we live in a country were these types of documents can be written up with ease. In Brazil it isn't the case and takes a LOt of money and time.

I always thought here they where like $35-75. Granted I don't know how well those cheaper ones hold up either.

Suggest me that particular time to start writing.

I suggests now. Other people think later depends on you.

I was made to have a will sincie i was 16! in my opinion everyone should have a will. I have seen waaay to many people die preaturely, leaving behind them a nightmare of paperwork and assets to sort out.
For what it takes i for one would definately recommend starting a will asap.
