Autumn is inevitable - Enjoy your summers!

in life •  6 years ago

I was tempted to spend a lazy afternoon with a big cup of coffee in front of my laptop, but… autumn is coming for real, temperatures are expected to drop sharply over the next few days, destroying any lingering illusion it’s still summer and there’s still time to have fun in the sun, as the saying goes.

Some spend most of their lives under the illusion summer will last for ever and there’s plenty of time for them to do a lot of amazing things they’re too busy or rather too scared to try. Today. As tomorrow you might wake up to a rainy miserable day and discover all those things you put off are suddenly no longer an option.

After we came home from our from our stroll, I saw on my FB feed a good friend of mine posted one of those inspirational quotes about late summer and the coming ‘colorful’ autumn’. But the colors are only there on the screen as she sure as hell wouldn’t take a moment to relax in the park. Just as she is not capable of breaking out of her routine to enjoy a concert with her all-time favorite singer, Rod Stewart tomorrow night. On her profile it says she is going and weeks ago I half-heartedly agreed to go with her to provide company. ‘We cannot miss that’, she texted me. A free event within walking distance of her house. Yet, judging by her conspicuous silence, I know she’s changed her mind - going out on a Sunday evening would be too much like actually living. Maybe share a link about the concert and pretend to have a life. Maybe another time…
Works for me, as I wasn’t really interested. After all, I’ve been to three concerts only this month. As a good friend, maybe I should insist - ‘get your lazy ass out of the house’, but then I already know all her excuses.

Somebody else was telling me the other day that if she can fix some of her health issues stemming from decades of hard work and self-neglect, maybe she’ll have the opportunity to travel and see some of the places she’d wanted to see all her life. Optimism is a good thing so I agreed - ‘yes, who knows’ - but sadly it is not the case. The only roads that are still open for her are to the doctor’s office. Hawaii is no longer an option.

I have come to the conclusion that many of the people who are too scared to go out and live their lives, somehow think all the time they waste and the opportunities they don’t take are stored somewhere, like in a bank account. Falling in love, doing something crazy, going on amazing trip, dying your hair pink -why if they haven’t used any of these cards, it must be there’s still time for them. How can it be too late if I’m not even married? In some extraordinary cases yes, life can truly begin even when you’re 50. Find your true love, leave your job and go on a trip around the world, discover your passion for painting. However, I think only few are lucky to enjoy an Indian summer. Most wake one day to discover they’ve missed summer entirely and all they are left with are the rainy days.

Starting this blog was very challenging for me as I'm not a social person by nature and I'm glad I did. Being a Steemian allowed me to enjoy myself chasing a squirell together with my son. We laughed like crazy, the squirell was jumping from tree to tree sending chestnuts over our heads - all for some pictures. This is the best shot I got, but at least I get to share a piece of actual life, not a meme or a quote.

Thanks for reading
