This is What Happens When I Neglect My ReadingsteemCreated with Sketch.

I should never neglect my book reading habit.

Sometimes I do neglect it, when I'm busy or overwhelmed. But every day that goes by without reading books drains a little bit of Me-ness from my orb of being and doing. I start to feel a little dull, a little gray, a little frayed around the edges. Where my imagination usually soars like a mecha-dragon, now it crawls along like a zombie-slug. I am too normal, and a little grumpy. I start to view my life as a series of things that have been done and things yet to do. I have devolved into a hive drone.

And then, I realize what's missing. I head straight to the Kindle store or, you know, the actual book store, and I purchase a fix.

By the end of the first page, I am settling into the familiar cocoon...

About 20% in, I can feel the old me wheels turning...

In the contented lull just after the Second Doorway of No Return, but just before the Climax, I approach the embodiment of my Final Form.

Climax. Denouement. The book ends. I have wings and enough Me-ness to keep me going for a couple of weeks.

I'm feeling the drain presently, and mentally shuffling through my book reading records, it occurs to me that I have not read a novel since January! Luckily, my Kindle is stocked up with as-yet-unread books I downloaded for such emergencies. I predict I'll spend much of the next week snuggled up on the couch with some delicious science fiction.

Can anyone relate?

Also, NEW GLASSES!

(So not only will I be able to get my fiction fix, but I'll be able to do it without going all blurry-eyed and getting a migraine.)

Wow! a true reader, I read about 2 hours a day and I find I miss my daily readings I feel bad lol. SO getting your daily reading fix is a true problem. great post!

That's awesome that you schedule time to read. I'd like to do that. I'm experimenting with getting up earlier to work and then relaxing in the evening with reading. So far, I think I like it.

I don't schedule a time to read; my life is too unpredictable for that. But I do try to read at least two pages a day. Usually I do it before bed, and if the book's interesting and I'm not dead tired, I usually end up reading a lot more than two pages.

Nice! When I read before work and the book gets really interesting I keep reading and get late for work or barely make it on time. I am currently looking for books dealing with children since I am looking to do some work with a daycare and need to know the people more before I work there so got to dive into more books lol.

Awesome! relaxing from reading is the best, I love when I try different books and read them to a point I fall asleep reading. I have a reading spot lol, its on my bean bag lol. super comfortable

First of all, you look absolutely adorable in those new glasses. Hope you don't mind my sayin'...

Something about this year hasn't been conducive for reading, for me. 2017, I read 60 books. 2018 so far, not one! Steemit + new job + terrible weather = shifting priorities, I guess.

I've heard that a lot of writers don't actually read fiction while they're working on a book - something about undue influence and distraction. But it sounds like you're approach is the opposite. You immerse yourself in others' words as fuel. Is that right?

Ah, thank you for the compliment. I've been wearing the same shape of glasses for about 15 years, so the new style feels a little weird and is taking some adjustment, but I'm sure I'll get used to them soon.

I keep track of how many books I read, and try to read at least one more each year than I did the year before. It's been a looooong time since I read as many as you did last year, though. Motherhood doesn't let me read as voraciously as I once did. This year's goal is 24, and I'm at three so far. We'll see how I do.

I usually do read fiction while I am working on a book, but I have to be careful to avoid voice creep. I'm fairly accustomed to checking for it in my edits these days.

I came to check in on you. Hadn't seen much from you. So I hope I'm reading this as you are reading a dope novel.

SO dope. Also, I've had family in town the past few days. I'll be getting back to the Steemit postings in a couple days here. Thanks for checking in. :)

It's amazing how relatable this post is. Unless in the throes of a book hangover, reading is a daily activity. You really do feel unlike yourself for a bit. I find reading helps me picture other things in my mind better. Especially in conversations where stories are being told. Resteeming!

I find reading helps me picture other things in my mind better.

Yes! My imagination suffers when I don't read fiction regularly.

Thanks for the resteem!

It's really nice to read everyday. If we read even for half an hour, our mind becomes fresh. I feel that very well. Keep it up :D

I feel so much more alive when I start intentionally reading again. I can relate to the feeling you've expressed.

I know the feeling. I have a Kindle that fills quicker than I can keep up with it. Although I have been on a reading frenzy of late, compared to other times. There's just so many good books to read.

I have a Kindle that fills up quicker than I can keep up with it.

Me too! I subscribe to BookBub and another daily email that sends me deals on Kindle books in the genres that I love. So I'm always getting free or 99 cent books, probably two or three a week. There's no way I can keep up at my current pace. But at least if the zombie apocalypse happens, I will be prepared! (um...actually, I guess I have to make sure all of those books are downloaded onto the Kindle before the zombie apocalypse happens, and that I have some way to charge the Kindle while I'm on the run or holing up in a makeshift fortress. I guess I'd better get to work on that!)

I wondered about BookBub. Something I may take a look at, although it just adds to my reading list. Still, there are worse things that could happen in this world. Like the zombie apocalypse occurring when my Kindle is out of charge.

I like BookBub a lot. You can choose what genres you prefer to hear about deals in, and they have a very rigorous selection process, so I rarely go wrong when I click on one of their offers. Another service I like is Book Barbarian. It's science fiction and fantasy specific, and it has a less rigorous selection process than BookBub. This can sometimes lead to some crappy books being listed in their daily emails, but it is good in that it allows you to see a lot of stuff written by newer and lesser known indie authors. I actually found my favorite book that I read last year on Book Barbarian. (It's called Clovenhoof, if you're interested. It's the hilarious story of how Satan gets kicked out of hell for failing to meet his quotas, and ends up living in London with a couple of quirky neighbors.)

I can relate a little too well!

Sometimes i forgot how good i feel after reading quality book. You just reminded me, thank you for that. Btw i have one question, since you wrote on your profile that you're homeschooling parent. Is your schoolteaching relevant for secundary scool and later for job? I mean we do not have that practice in our country so i curious, it looks like a great alternative to this modern "educational" system. :)

Wao good post

Books are rare treasures, but its a pity only the adventrous can sacrifice time to read these days of smart technology.

A saying goes that when you wantto hide an information, hide it in a book.

Keep up your quest in reading and do not relent.

Wow, what a warm smile on your "new glasses" picture. Use that one, the one you have for your logo doesn't do you quite the justice!

Yes, I know what you mean by falling behind on reading. I'm falling behind on everything. Reading, my 3D printer, setting up my new Linux computer, writing my stories, and the general daily at-home stuff. All falling behind. Help me I'm drowning in stuff to do!
