Is Slashdot dead, 2017-09-27 Wed.png

The site's still up, but trying to log in gives an error -- and, the newest headline is from a day and a half ago, whereas they generally have new articles every few hours.

Attempting to log in gives this error:

503 - Service Offline

Slashdot is presently in offline mode. Only the front page and story pages linked from the front page are available in this mode. Please try again later.

And, that most recent article also says it has 7 comments, but viewing at "-1" threshold, I see only 2.

It's not a site that I much care for these days, but I did grow up in technology along with it. Lately it seems too much of a liberal bastion, and I'm not at all interested in hearing that deranged viewpoint. Used to be, or, perhaps it too has changed.

I know I've changed. I found Ron Paul in 2012, anarchy around 2014/15, and returned to Scripture in 2016. I also got three concussions since 2013, the most recent being 7 months ago, so I'm no longer any good at writing software. It's good to follow industry trends, which was why I started reading Slashdot again a year or so ago.

Any other sites to follow industry trends? (Apart from right here, haha!)

The origin of the name "Slashdot" is somewhat amusing so I'll state it here as well. When spoken, the URL for Slashdot, http://slashdot.org, sounds like "http colon slash slash slash dot dot org" -- and if you wrote that, "http:///..org", it is not a valid URL! Thus, it was geek humor (and their tagline was initially "News for Nerds: Stuff that Matters" although that went by the wayside years ago). They've been bought and sold numerous times, were owned by Dice at one point (a resume site like Monster).

Didn't see an announcement, and searching for "slashdot down" only finds the "DownDetector" site which says they're still up -- and, I agree, they are! They're just "in offline mode" whatever that means. So the site is reachable, but not usable. No comment since a day and a half ago, either. There are some comments that seem to have been posted after that, but they don't have a datestamp on them!

They have a Twitter feed, and are still publishing articles there, but there's no notice about site maintenance etc.

Just curious. Thanks for any info!

It's up for me too and their Fb is updated. I've found a discussion on reddit, they seem to have some issues: https://www.reddit.com/r/slashdot/comments/72pplq/slashdotorg_is_experiencing_some_issues_cause_is/

SLASHDOT UP

Seems to be working now. Funny story about the name. I also find it funny when companies named themselves with unsearchable terms. Like the band, "The The." Looks like algorithms have caught up now! Oh also, the band, "The Band."

Huh, never been to that site before.

@libertyteeth,
To me it's working :O
