Do You Earn Anything?

in life •  4 years ago

"Do You Deserve Anything?" is the most famous question uttered by a frustrated soul searching for freedom. It's also the most famous self-help book on the planet and one of the most popular audio books on the planet. This question and its follow-up question, "How Can I Get Anything I Deserve?" are the touchstones of the self-help industry.

We live in a world where people want everything all the time. They want their kids to be happy, their spouses to be happy, and their best friends to be happy. They will go to great lengths to make sure that happens. If they can't have everything they want, they'll feel like their lives are missing something. When they don't achieve the things they want out of life, they feel like they've failed.

But are we feeling as we should be feeling when we feel we're not getting what we deserve out of life? When we recognize that we don't deserve anything else, and we try to find a way to get it, only to find that nothing gets done. We might put in a lot of energy and try to force ourselves into action, but we still find ourselves frustrated and disappointed. The feeling of worthlessness gnaws at us and we feel unworthy.

So what does this say about us? If we feel we deserve anything else, it means that we are a victim of circumstances and events in our lives. If someone else decides that they want us to feel worthy and valuable, that someone else can decide how we should live our lives, then we have no control over it. We might try very hard to make ourselves feel valuable, to try to control our circumstances, to act well, and to try to get others to like us, but if someone else decides that they don't need you or feel you don't deserve them, then you'll be worthless. It's not your fault, and you shouldn't feel guilty or worthless because you were born into this world with limited abilities.

If you truly want to know the answer to the question, "Do You Earn Anything? ", the first step is to stop trying to get anyone to like you, to like your capabilities, to love you, to respect you, and to be grateful for anything else. In the end, you'll be able to appreciate life when it isn't busy treating you poorly.

Your ability to love yourself and others will come naturally when you recognize that you don't deserve anything else. You deserve happiness, peace, love, health, success, and whatever your heart desires. Take the time to think about that now, instead of when things are going wrong and you're trying so hard to survive. When you are trying so hard right now, you are actually robbing yourself of true happiness. And the less effort you put into pleasing people, the more happiness you will find when life is easy.
