While trying to find more inspiration for my next short story, I learned about emotional repression. It is a pyschological situation in which an individual is excessively trying to control their emotions. Even on the surface controlling our emotion can be a positive thing, it is actually something we should be refraining doing. Controlling our emotions too much leads to hidden stresses and tension. And according to Dr A.A. Brill quoted from Dale Carnegie, how to enjoy your life and job, 100% fatigue from sedentary workers is due emotional factors. So emotional repression can be taxing on your mental health and physique. Therefore I want to share the key to heal from repressed emotion.
First of, we often hear, don't hold back. It's true.
Never hold back your emotions.
From my personal experience, repressing my emotion had made me experienced chest pain. It was a nightmare because it similar to angina and hearth-attack situation. Only later after I was being honest to everyone around me, my health tremendously improved.
If you experience repressed emotions and wanting to be liberated, just be honest. Be honest with yourself, your surrounding, your bitter past, be honest with everything. Acknowledge all the feelings that you have. Freely express yourself. If you find it hard talking to someone, write. A simple prompt will be " What are you most insecure about?", " What is your current biggest frustration?" by answering these questions, you will get the chance to identify your emotions and helps you finding ways to solve your problems.
There are also other ways to express your emotions. Whatever you fancy, from cooking, art, music, reading, learning. As long as you can channel it. However, managing emotion is also an important thing to do. A mentor of mine told me that truth doesn't have to be bitter. There are ways to deliver your emotions in more effective ways especially when it is connected to other person. The key with emotional repression is being honest.
Confess your deepest dark secret and let go. Then focus on the present and now.
