Adolph Eduard Luderitz bought a piece of ground from Joseph Frederick in the then South West Africa. This happened in 1883 after which a railway line was built between the coast and Keetmanshoop.

In 1905 the settlement developed further through the building of more permanent structures.

During the same time diamonds were discovered and it stimulated the economy further.

The picture on the 5cent stamp is that of the Paul Weiss Haus that was constructed in 1909. The steep angle of the roof is a sign that the building was based on a construction style that was used in Europe to cater for snow fall, not that any snow will fall in Luderitz!

The Deutsche Afrika Bank built in 1906 is shown on the 15 cent stamp. This is a very sturdy building and is currently a national monument.

The 20 cent stamp has a picture of the 1911 constructed Schroederhaus. Mr Ziegler designed this building in the typical North German style of the time.

The Altes Postamt building built in 1908 is pictured on the 25 cent stamp. It was designed by Mr Reinhard of the German railway company.

The 1912 constructed Felsenkirche was drawn on the commemorative envelope itself. This church is a well known building in Luderitz.
