There is a Song That Only You Can Sing and the World Needs You to Sing it!

in life •  8 years ago

As a professional acting and voice coach, there was one phenomenon that I found astounding and profound and that is this:

The group of muscles that make up the human voice are only ever fully utilized in the act of singing. No other vocalization can access all of them at the same time. Your voice was made to sing.

Now, you may be thinking, I suck at singing, you don't want to hear that!

I could probably help and even get you to the point that you liked the sound of your voice, but that's not what I'm talking about here, right now, in this place and time. It's a metaphor for something bigger. You see, I believe that just like your voice has developed in such a way that you can only fully utilize it through singing, your life is the same way.

There is a song, a task, a journey, a work of art, a story that is uniquely you.

And until you find this, you will never be fully all that you are capable of being. You feel it in your very core. As you are reading this, I don't care how cynical, or rational you think you were when you started, you feel it. Something in you calling out to be shared.

  • Everyone has one, a song to sing. Yours is not the same as mine, but it is there and it is waiting for you to stop resisting.
  • Every fiber of your being longs to come alive at the same time! You've experienced that feeling, when she said yes, when your child was born, when that someone came home that you thought you would never see again, that is close to what I'm talking about!
  • But in this song, it is not one moment, or even one hour, or one day that will change, it is all of you.

Your life experience is completely unique and there will never be another like it

While it is true, your experiences are not unique, the combination, the timing, the order and the placement of your time on this planet will never be duplicated. And out of that you have a unique contribution to make.

Like the ingredients of a fine wine, or a gourmet recipe, once you've found your song, the moments, the struggles, the successes the pains and the joys of your life will all fall into place, in one, crystal clear moment. This does not mean that it all makes sense, very often life is not like that. But even those moments can be redeemed, if we choose it.

No one else can ever sing your song.

If you choose not to contribute that passion that lies hidden inside of you, it will pass out of time and existence with you. It will never be heard. This may seem like a blessing to you, but your song is not just for you!

We are never alone in this world and when we fail to sing, it is possible we may be eliminating someone else's catalyst for their own song. We may be the inspiration of something we cannot even begin to imagine.

  • Someone, somewhere, showed Ghandi the power of love through their song.
  • Someone, somewhere, literally shared their songs with Bach, Beethoven and Mozart and the chain reaction is still influencing music, art, literature, inspiring people in ways we cannot even begin to imagine.
  • Your song may be for everyone, or just for a few, the most precious are just for one.

It is said that all it takes to dispel darkness is a single candle, but failing to light it can leave the entire world in an inky void.

What if those who inspire you never sang?

Throughout your life, you've likely found inspiration in people you know, in works of art, in literature, in music, in performances. What if they never sang?

  • Your favorite films wouldn't exist. Your favorite actors would have no lines to deliver, no characters to play and the landscape of your memory would never have those landmarks.
  • The book you turn to when you just need to remember what it feels like to be yourself might never have been written.
  • That painting, that song, that sculpture or building that stirs you might never have come into being.

I know, these things seem big, but let's bring it down to something we can all relate to.

  • Your favorite school teacher, the one that made you appreciate learning about your favorite subject was singing their song.
  • Your grandmother, when she taught you your favorite recipe, or how to make your favorite craft, was singing her song.
  • Your significant other, your father, your priest, your coach, your ballet teacher. Whoever it was that inspired you in your life, what if they had chosen not to sing?

You see, even one tiny song bird might give someone enough hope in a dark moment to keep their hear beating, and that moment might save someone who changes the world!

No one does anything in a vacuum in this world and the things we do, echo!

Some call it the butterfly effect, the action that takes place, like tiny ripples in a pond, working out from a single action to touch a life, then that life touches another, and another and another. If you've ever been to a candle light service, or vigil, you've seen it, one candle lights another, then another until the darkness is pushed back!

  • This is how revolutions are started, when one man, or woman says enough, follow me, I'll stand!
  • This is how wars are started when one of us takes another's life and then another, and another.
  • This is how societies rise and fall, fashions come and go, eras begin and end, through the single song, influencing one more, then that one influencing the next and so on.

Not everyone chooses to sing a song of beauty.

I believe that everyone's true song is one of love, and light, that adds beauty to our world, but we have a choice. If we choose to look for darkness, we will find it and out of that can come some horrific songs.

That is why, for those of us who hold a beautiful song inside, it's important that we let it out! One dark song can take a hundred, a thousand, 5 million lives and turn continents into charred wastelands, but one beautiful song can help that land rise from its ashes!

  • There are famous songs we all know, inspirational people who stood strong and built, or rebuilt something we all admire.
  • But, where did they learn their song? It wasn't all from great masterpieces that came before, it was stitched together from small and big songs, until it became a great symphony and many singers joined in.
  • What if your song was the key? What if the inspiration you hold was the missing piece in a puzzle that unlocked the next great awakening in human consciousness?

So, what I am saying is, sing! If singing literally, is your song, then do it! If it's nursing, then do that, if it's building then build your heart out, or invent, or paint, or build the business that brings your city back from the brink! Or raise beautiful children and teach them to sing, find your song!

Whatever song is in you, let it out and let it be beautiful, even if it is small. Think of all the smiles on all the faces that have been brought to light by something as simples as "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star"

I see things similarly:

We all have a unique energy, which we may either withhold from the world (likely suffering a bit in the process due to, among other things, the unconscious realization that we're achieving less than we're capable of) or allow to flow freely through us.

The latter tends to require some amount of faith in oneself and the courage to step outside of one's comfort zone (face the unknown), but it also has HUGE rewards - namely, the things that you so eloquently shared in your piece, here.

Profound. Moving. Inspirational.

There has been one time in my life where I felt what you described - every fiber of my being came alive at the same time. And ironically, it was when I was singing.

I had been trying to expand my vocal range. It was at 3 octaves. I worked and worked with a voice coach to sing higher and higher and one night, around 8:30 pm, I did it. As a natural Alto, I reached High C, then D, then E, then F and finally, I sang the G above high C so loudly that it was heard across the building.

I was singing, every part of my body, heart and mind were singing. I was all voice, all High G and nothing else existed except my body and the note piercing the air.

Thank you for the reminder of that beautiful moment. Thank you for the inspiration to reach it again in many different ways.

Cool story, I had the privilege of launching 1000 kids on that journey over 15 years, I miss that part.

Very interesting post @markrmorrisjr congratulations my friend, thanks for sharing this brilliant post

Such a cool post.

Thanks

Beautifully written @markrmorrisjr
As a former singer/soloist, I have felt the joy of being electrified by everything coming together in one perfect moment. I have many sad excuses as to why I've stopped singing but the main one is that I've lost the joy of it and have a hard time finding it again. But your post reminds me of something a very good friend told me once. She actually reprimanded me and said I was selfish for not sharing my voice with the rest of the world. It was humbling and I would have thought she was "blowing smoke" except that she was quite talented and I admired her very much. She could be brutally honest most of the time. That being said - perhaps I need to expand my thinking and find reasons to sing again...and find that perfect connection. I seem to have lost that.

Try a completely different style, maybe even one you think you hate. Get you out of your own head. You might also try teaching. You never really own a technique until you share it with someone else.

I actually taught the youth choir at my previous church. The lessons were fun but they sure could fek up on performance Sunday. I've always wanted to be a rock star LOL but my voice is more Julie Andrews...and since I haven't sung a serious note in about 4 years, I'd say I've the voice of a toad now. But there's always Steemit's open mic night! ;)

You'll be surprised at how quickly it all comes back once you start training again. A lot of the foundation, like the breathing, you never forget.

Very true! I used to be so active but since I've moved to Florida, all the good quality choirs that I would consider auditioning for are between 1 to 2 hours away. It kind of sucks the life out of any motivation to vocalize. But there is magic when you begin to sing to an audience...and they disappear...and the only thing that seems to exist are the beautiful sounds, especially when the mechanics of it are like a true extension of one's self, like breathing without thinking about it.

Hello sir ! I enjoyed reading your thoughts..I was searching for singers on Steemit actually because I have written a song but I have no melody...https://steemit.com/music/@elenahornfilm/sing-this-song-please

Well, I hope you find one!
