I saw a man once eager to achieve the best in life
Have cars and lands and houses and a model trophy wife
Dream big, eat big, live big, and just as big he planned to die
He had the drive and vision, all he had to do was try.
He set to work his will, and to us all, he sure would blow
But then I just did hear that he’s now six feet down below.
To him who only desires to earthly things amass,
“A man’s worth is not found in the possessions that he has.”
My people knew this lady once, so full of life and zeal,
“You only live once”, she would say, “so why not get a thrill?
Poverty’s not an option, so to make it, don’t be shy
Do runs and flings today, and on the morrow, find a guy.”
Living life on the fast lane, she was caught up in a web
Now she lies on a hospice bed, her life’s begun to ebb.
To her who tries to build a life on structures frail as glass,
“A woman’s worth’s not found in the possessions that she has.”
So take heed if you’re wise, and to my humble words incline,
Let wisdom stay your hand, and from the ills of youth decline.
For young ones are deceived by all the time they think they own
Yet man is but a breath, a fragile weed yesterday sown;
Today it blooms, tomorrow gone and vanished from the earth
So set your faculties on projects of eternal worth.
“Cis transit gloria mundi”, the world’s glories soon shall pass;
Only a fool finds worth in the possessions that he has.
