सचमुच बड़ी उलझन है । प्राचीन आचार्यों और विचारकों ने जो लिखा, वह प्रत्यक्ष में क्यों नहीं हो रहा है ? “सच्चे का बोलबाला, झूठे का मुहं काला” वाली उक्ति आज उलटी क्यों साबित हो रही है ? दो चीजें हमेशा आदमी को उलझन में डालती हैं । एक हो तो कोई बात नहीं, किन्तु विकल्प अगर दो हों तो आदमी चक्कर में पड़ जाता है कि किसे अपनाऊँ?

यथार्थता यह है कि उलझनें आदमी को सोचने-विचारने का अवसर भी प्रदान करती हैं । यहां इस बात को देखना जरुरी है कि वे बातें उस युग में कही गई, जिस युग में सत्य के प्रति विश्वास था और आचरण का बहुत महत्त्व था । चरित्रशून्य ज्ञान का महत्त्व नहीं था और चरित्रशून्य धन का भी महत्त्व नहीं था । महामात्य चाणक्य ने एक बहुत सुंदर बात लिखी कि धन दो प्रकार का होता है – अर्थ और अर्थाभास । इसे आज की भाषा में कहते हैं सफेद धन और काला धन । जो न्याय, नीति और सच्चाई के साथ कमाया जाता है, वह है अर्थ । जो छल-फरेब और धोखाधड़ी से कमाया जाता है, दूसरों को धोखा देकर और दूसरों का शोषण करके कमाया जाता है, वह है अर्थाभास । वह अर्थ का आभास जरुर दे रहा है, किन्तु सच्चा अर्थ नहीं है । दुनिया की बात छोड़ दें, अगर भारत के संदर्भ में अर्थ और अर्थाभास का विवेचन और विश्लेषण किया जाए, रिसर्च की जाए तो कितना अर्थ है, कितना अर्थाभास है, यह जानकर किसी की भी आँखे खुल जाएंगी । यहां अर्थाभास का पलड़ा काफी भारी मिलेगा । नैतिकता से धनार्जन करने वाले लोग अब अल्पसंख्यक की श्रेणी में आ जाएंगे ।

हमारे देश में जौजुदा स्थिति में अर्थाभास बहुत ज्यादा है । क्योंकि सचाई और न्याय-नीति में विश्वास क्षीण हो रहा है । सच्चाई और समृद्धि दोनों साथ हो सकते हैं, आदमी को इस पर विश्वास नहीं रहा है । ईमानदारी से भी धन कमाया जा सकता है, इस बात पर लोग बहुत कम विश्वास करते हैं । इसके उदाहरण भी अब बहुत कम मिलते हैं, जबकि बेईमानी से धनवान बनने वाले लोगों के उदाहरण बहुत ज्यादा मिलेंगे । समाज में अनैतिकता बढ़ने का यही सबसे बड़ा कारण है ।

विश्वास की बहाली एक बड़ी समस्या है । इसका समाधान कैसे खोजें ? चरवाहे और भेड़-बकरियों वाली कहानी तो हम सबने सुन ही रखी है । इससे हम समझ सकते है कि चरित्र के साथ सत्य का बहुत सम्बन्ध है । असत्य बोलने पर लोग इकठठे हुए, किन्तु जब विश्वास उठ गया तो लोगों ने इकठठे होना बंद कर दिया । चरवाहे को नुकसान हुआ उसकी भेड़-बकरिया भेड़िया (एक जंगली हिंसक प्राणी) खा गया । उस समय की धारणाएं, उस समय का चिंतन चरित्र को मुख्य मानने का था । आज से दो-ढाई हजार वर्ष, बल्कि पंद्रह सौ और हजार वर्ष पहले तक भारतवर्ष का चरित्र सत्य को प्रधानता देता था । एक घटना-प्रसंग है –

ठाकर की नींद खुल गई । उसने सवेरे यह बात अपने गांव के बारहठजी को बताई तो उस चारण ने तुरंत एक दोहा कहा –

सत मत छोड़ा ठाकरां, सत छोड़ा पत जाय ।
सत की बांधी लक्ष्मी फेर मिलेगी आय ।।

ठाकर साहब ! सत्य को मत छोड़ो, क्योंकि सत्य छूट गया तो विश्वास भी चला जाएगा । अगर सत्य है तो लक्ष्मीजी स्वयं चली आएगी ।

उस समय का यह प्रबल विश्वास था कि सत्य है तो लक्ष्मी आएगी, धन आएगा, समृद्धि बढ़ेगी । पर शनैः-शनै: पता नहीं कैसी हवा चली कि आज स्थिति यह है कि चरित्र का पक्ष तो बिल्कुल ही गौण हो गया । आज चरित्र को लेकर कहीं कोई चिंतन नहीं किया जा रहा है । जहां विश्वास डगमगा जाता है, श्रद्धा हिल जाती है, वहां चरित्र की बात परे हो जाती है । वह उपेक्षित हो जाता है । युग का प्रभाव कहें या अर्थशास्त्रीय अवधारणा या उसके अध्ययन का प्रभाव कहें, चरित्र को बहुत उपेक्षित कर दिया गया है । सारे लोग अर्थशास्त्र के अध्येता नहीं हैं । अर्थशास्त्र की भाषा और उसके नियमों से भी अधिकांश लोग अनभिज्ञ हैं, किन्तु अर्थ का प्राबल्य और उसकी बहुलता के कारण आज सारी बात, मनुष्य के सारे क्रिया-कलाप एक अर्थ की धुरी की ही परिक्रमा कर रहे हैं । आदमी की सारी सोच अर्थ के संदर्भ में ही है । उसकी हर प्रवृति उसे अर्थ के निकट खीँच लाती है । धर्म भी करने को उद्यत होता है तो उसके लिए अर्थ का प्रबंध करना पड़ता है । हवन-पूजन के लिए भी थोडा-बहुत अर्थ अपेक्षित हो जाता है । कथा वाचक पंडितजी भी एक निश्चित रकम लिए बिना कथा सुनाने को राजी नहीं होते । जगराता भी कराओ तो कीर्तन मण्डली वाले हजार-पांच सौ से कम पर राजी नहीं होते ।
