My worries
As many are in celebration mood during this festive season, I have not been able to enjoy the same, mainly because I have many things running on my mind concerning the year ahead.
Let me start by giving a small history of where I live. I’m from a country Far East of Africa called Kenya, with its capital city Nairobi. Kenya has many tourist attraction sites, but I will not talk about that, which is a story for another day.
Christmas and new year festive here in Africa mostly my country Kenya are marked with a lot of celebrations whereby the working population that resides in urban setting mostly leaves the city to travel to the upcountry to celebrate with the rest of their extended families.
At this time, for the first time foreigner may think that the city doesn’t host many populations which when on an average time of the year its fill with millions of people some employed and other unemployed. Also, traffic congestion is very low at this time of the year. Mainly its because most of the public service vehicle here refers to as “matatu” which operates within the city and its environs have been booked or hired to ferry passenger to the various upcountry parts. So, during this time for those who have their private vehicles and have not visited the upcountry enjoys the smooth running in and outside the capital city.
Did I say “matatu” are booked or hired to ferry passages! Ooh! Yes, I forgot to tell you that also the travel fare is as much as twice the normal time of the year. What an exploitation of high order? This exploitation is done by “matatu” association to maximize their profit. Despite the hiked travel fare, and the issuance of short-term transport licenses to short distance operators to facilitate the movement, you’ll still find a large number of passages stranded in major “matatu” terminals due to a shortage of “matatu.”
During this time drivers tend to be careless and reckless making many end up losing their lives and thus, the vice versa instead of celebrations, mourning. Also is at this time of the year when people tend to forget their usual spending hence overspending on their savings not realizing January is around the corner leading to a situation characterized by a broke January.
For these and many other reasons which I have not fully exploited in this, I find it difficult to go through all this all in the name of the festive season. I always choose to remain indoors until this is over and after I take a visit to the upcountry during the off-peak time of the year.
Now coming to my worries as all of these are running on my mind. I have so many things to worry about as January knocks on the door.
My worry number one is the essential fundamental human wants. I recently terminated the contract with an organization I was working to this is due to unexplainable reasons. But anyway even the deal was in due at the end of December so for me terminating does not have much effect, but I worry that in the next coming months I don’t have a clue on how I’ll provide for my family basic wants including food, clothes, and housing.
Did I say housing? Ooh! Yes, I lived in a rented apartment where I pay over 500dollar per month, and the landlord does not want any explanations comes 5th of the beginning of each month, I must move up and down to ensure the rents is on time. That culminates in my second worry as January knocks the door.
My third worry is that I have a daughter who is looking on me. She is now 3years, and she is about to start her elementary classes come January. My worry about this is that I don’t know how I will finance this and also finance my master education given my current status of life.
But all in all, I thanks, Almighty God for the gift of life considering that many were unable to see this time of year. Also, I pray that He will lead me to see the anticipated New Year. And all my worries will have sustaining solutions.
These are some of my worries, what are yours as the January knocks on the door?
