Measuring Motivation

I was talking to my friend who does business, and they had to learn about motivation, they used the theory of 50/50 motivation by John Adair to explain this, the famous quote is:

"50% of motivation comes from within a person, and 50% from his or her environment, especially from the leadership encountered therein.”

Now, personally I don't see how you could split it to evenly and such a clear cut from where motivation comes from. Motivation is a very hard thing to describe, although it is simply a drive that push you towards your goals some people may be motivated in the mind but let down by work ethic. They still may be motivated but fear or other factors may slow it down. It also depends on how much of an individualist you are, if you prefer to work by yourself with no others intervention then it may be just as productive as a team.

So I dont agree with gauging it in terms of numbers of each way, I prefer to look at it in a simpler form, the goal is the motivation and the way you personally act, work and discipline yourself to reach that goal is how you harness the motivation and the better you are at these things the more likely you are to use this motivation in the best way possible.

Also the goal itself may give you higher and lower levels of motivation depending on the reward, say for example cleaning the dishes although may be important isn't very rewarding compared to getting a good qualification which ultimately gives you more opportunities and financial rewards through better jobs. So it all depends on how we value certain goals. Different people may value different achievements differently so wont try as hard at certain things.

So the best way to motivate yourself in my opinion is to find yourself a goal that gives you a great level of reward! I have laid out many things that are long term projects that I am excited by and I work hard at these things, but sometimes my discipline lets me down, and I can sometimes be lazy when asked to do things that dont motivate me so much.

What motivates and excites you the most?

I think money is the biggest motivator. Most people when they have an amount of money that makes them comfortable, lose a lot of motivation. This is unfortunate, when you think that many of the devs in crypto have reached that point. Some seem just as motivated but others aren't doing as much as they were when they didn't have money. It can be different if you're doing something just because you enjoy it. I think that's why some people never seem to lose their motivation. That's why I think we should make sure we stick to doing what we enjoy.
