Sahel is a region that borders the desert in Sahara in Africa. Human exploitation of limited water in the region has caused mass desertification and significantly increased the risk of drought and hunger. In just 12 years, between 1972 and 1984, more than 100,000 people died in this area due to drought.
4.Snake Island, Brazil
Officially known as Ilha de Queimada Grande, the Island of Snakes is located off the coast of Sao Paulo, Brazil. Notorious for an extremely high occurrence of snakes, the island is the only place on Earth where the feared Golden Lancehead Viper lives. The snake’s venom is so powerful that it actually melts human flesh. No wonder the Brazilian government banned visitors here.
3.Lake Kivu, Democratic Republic of Congo
Renowned as one of the great lakes of Africa, Lake Kivu is located along the borded between Congo and Rwanda.But deep below its surface, the lake houses over 2.3 trillion cubic miles of carbon dioxide, which, if released, can spark a methane explosion, incite lake tsunamis and kill the two million residents that call the the basic home.
2.Minqin County, China
China’s Minqin County has the distinction of being an ever-diminishing oasis trapped between two deserts. The drought-ridden area is afflicted with 130 days of wind and dust each year as the surrounding deserts continue gobbling up what little greenery is left.
Since 1950, the desert has covered more than 100 square miles of the county and as of 2004, the desert was approaching Minqin at a rate of 10 meters per year. With such unlivable land and an increasingly vulnerable population, the Chinese government has rightly deemed Minqin an ecological disaster area and has started to relocate the more than two million people who call it home.
1.Sana'a, Yemen
It is known as one of the most dangerous places to live in due to the constant bombings, assassinations, and random acts of terrorism.
The old city of Sana'a has a distinctive visual character due to its unique architecture but is also known as one of the most dangerous places you could ever live in. The US Department of State advises its citizens to avoid traveling to the area as it is one of the most politically unstable places in the world. Protesters and government forces frequently clash and things go out of control within minutes.
