PAPA-PEPPER TEACHES THE LITTLE-PEPPERS ABOUT HEAD WOUNDS... THE HARD WAY

in life •  7 years ago

So, what do you do when you're heading to the ocean and wind up with a very bloody head wound?

Yesterday, I took a couple of my older @little-peppers out to South Padre Island to check things out.

We had a nice drive over and then stopped for some pizza. There is a nearby spot that I know of where there are some crabs, so I thought that I would show them a few things before we went to the actual island.

There we were, catching hermit crabs and blue crabs. It was just Pinkie-pepper, Red-pepper and Papa. I was about to lead them up to the truck to grab something else that we needed. As I was working my way up, I ducked under a tree and ended up ramming a broken off branch into the top of my head.

MY BLOODY HEAD!

Immediately blood began to gush out from under my hairline. It was very hot out, and I got a little light-headed. Since we had just began our adventure, I did not want to ruin it by heading to a hospital instead. Though head wounds often bleed a lot and can look really bad, many are not as serious as they look. I needed time to evaluate the situation.

Thankfully, I gave up drinking, so my blood was not thinned. By pushing hard on the wound, the blood flow slowed down and eventually stopped. I felt fine for the most part, and explained the situation to the @little-peppers that I had with me. They were very calm, but also concerned. Not trying to draw any unnecessary attention to myself, we made out way up to the truck and got my face cleaned off.

I had planned on recording a few videos of Hermit Crabs and Blue Crabs. With their help I continued. We had to do something while we waited. Also, since we were heading to the beach next, I thought that we might be able to attract a shark if we used my bloody head as bait. That could make an interesting video post.

When we passed by that branch later, we could actually see that it had a clump of my hair on it. OUCH!

In the end, the bleeding did stop, and by the time we got to the beach, I was able to jump in without having it reopen. I decided that the salt water would be good enough for a "cleaning job" at the time, and we got on with our. If we would have given up or went to the hospital, we would have had a much different day and I would not have been able to make this recording.

Obviously, life can be dangerous. Sometimes, it is not the venomous snakes or scorpions that are what get you, but a tree branch. Yeah, that's kind if ironic and anticlimactic.

It gave me a chance to teach my little ones a little more about things, and it was another "do as I say, not as I do" experience for them. Many choices that I make are ones that others should not. If one of the @little-peppers wound up with this same wound, we would have been at the hospital in a matter of minutes. I hope that you guys enjoyed the video. Steem on!

As always, I'm @papa-pepper and here's the proof:

Hi @papa-pepper. I have translated this post about your headache. :-)))) You can see the translation here https://steemit.com/life/@igor-steem/papa-pepper-rasskazyvaet-svoim-melkim-peppers-pro-raneniya-golovy-samym-tyazhyolym-obrazom

Cool, thank you!

Hello @papa-pepper ! I want to translate this post into Russian. I will put up a reference to the translation here. :-)

Reminds me of the scene from Monty Python and The Holy Grail:

BLACK KNIGHT: 'Tis but a scratch.
ARTHUR: A scratch? Your arm's off!
BLACK KNIGHT: No, it isn't.
ARTHUR: Well, what's that then?
BLACK KNIGHT: I've had worse.

Head wounds bleed like crazy but you are absolutely correct that a hospital visit is not ALWAYS necessary. Many times pressure, cleaning, and a little bit of logic will deal with it quite effectively.

Practical lessons as unpleasant as they often are, remain great teachers

Ouch!
I'm glad that you are okay!

Way to stay positive bro!
How did the little peppers react?

They did good, they just wanted to make sure that I wasn't still feeling lightheaded when it was time to drive. Smart girls.

War Wounds

Sorry for the wound

Hello @papa-pepper ! Oh my god, I hope all is fine now ! The salt water was a good idea but still a visit at the hospital would be good you know.
Be more careful mate!
Cheers
@progressivechef

Glad to hear that it wasn't that serious of a head wound, that it just seemed like one. Your such a celeb on steemit I wouldn't want anything bad to happen to you out there as I enjoy reading your posts. Plus, your kind of an inspiartion to people. Stay safe and keep posting stuff papa-pepper!!

Wow, what a compliment! Thank you so much!

Dam brotha, take care of that wound!

nice papa-pepper

Nice head wound and bloody face?

my be...

Wow, the salt water healed my wounds pretty fast! I hope you are doing OK!

I think it helped! I'm doing great!

Papa-pepper, i'm happy about post papa ,,, does papa pepper like to comentar me ,, yes upvote wrote

You're happy that I got a head wound and bled a lot in front of my children?

I'm happy you are here to write about it - hopefully you cleaned it out well when you got back to the pepper patch! Lovin' your posts and style :)

So sorry you took a floggin' to the noggin! - hehe seems like whichever part of the brain that is responsible for sense of humour still seems to be functioning well though!! (great lingual burn!)

You and your kids seem to live a very exciting life, I'm sure they'll grow into really interesting adults because you're showing the world. It's wonderful to see a sea slug actually moving, I'm seen some incredible pictures of them but I never knew they swam like that, it looks like it's just flying through the water. Wonderful post, thank you for sharing! (And I'm glad to hear you're doing fine after your ordeal!)

OH NO sorry to hear you hit your head. Glad you are okay. thanks for sharing your journey with us. Love the photo of your daughter and the little crab. SO cute!

You are very blessed in so many things and the teaching was awesome on not going into panic mode, assessing, slowing down to let it stop, using it as a learning experience for real life for them. Kuddos to you on Parenting like a pro! Sharing!

We must take advantage of life never know what the future will rescue us

I'm glad you are alright. I'm wondering if you notified anyone about what happened, just in case it was worse than expected?
For example, call wife/friend, "Hey, this happened, I'm fine, we're at this location, I'll call in an hour to let you know it was not a big deal and I'm still fine."
Are your little preppers aware who to contact if you go down?
( I just started following you, so if you've covered this before, then disregard.)

You constantly find yourself in different situations. I noticed it=))

Ooosh! Courtesy of a branch, @papa-pepper?! Lucky it wasn't an eye thing. Head wounds are scary. @customnature and I were both professional wrestlers in our earlier lives and although there is an art to cutting your head for the effect of blood, it's startling seeing that much pour out of your skull. Glad the little ones weren't too startled. My son @guthrie would have freaked out.

And that seaslug is awesome!

Yes it is! It was an incredible find!

Hey friend, I hope the wound was not serious and that you are better. Greetings.

Hope you asked the missus to watch you that night for concussion you know wake you up now and then to make sure all is well glad your ok if you got this posted and blogged :) be well thanks for sharing that interesting swimmer I think somebody in another post called it a seaslug ?

Yup, it is a sea slug.

A good post is very useful friend salam know from me @ abupasi.alachy

Ouch! Good lesson to teach the Little Peppers, though!

I finished running the names. Sent it to you on Discord.

ouch! wounds on the head are always really sensitive! heal fast!

Survival skills for the younglings up and personal. Most parents don't understand that children learn by example, not just words. Although what happened to you sucks, in case something similar happens to them they will be calm and be able to take care of the situation.

Yes they will. They are good at it already.

That branch got a nice souvenir!!!

Glad you are OK.

Hmmm, this sounds like a future obstacle for Steem-pocolyspe. Glad you're ok @papa-pepper.

I'm relieved, the title read a little like you gave them head wounds!!

That sea slug is really cool though, I've never seen anything like it.

A wonderful publication Greetings to you I wish you a beautiful day

Ouch! Sorry to hear about your injury, looks painful. Get well soon

Great Job at getting the situation under control and making a great situation out of what could have ended up not being so great.

You are so right. It isn't always the creatures than can get you. My toe was once attacked by the corner of a wall.

Lol!

Ouch! Sorry to hear about your head wound @papa-pepper. The salt water of the Gulf is probably a really good cleanser.
Do you know about powered Cayenne pepper? Yeah, the hot one. It will stop the bleeding, even on more serious wounds. It does burn a bit but not as much as you would think. I was sceptical when I first heard of this, but have proven it is effective many many times. Just sprinkle on the wound and if its separated, hold together a few minutes. Voila' bleeding stopped.
P.S. I always carry a small vial in my vehicles.

I hate that happened to you but glad everything worked out and you and the kids enjoyed time together at the beach.

ur gay man

Not even close.

Unlucky mate done it myself before today not good and in front of the kids. I half expected you to say the crabs done it . Cheers mike

I think you have a lil cut on your head ;)

Glad you're ok. Awesome slug!

Thanks Doc!

What are those wounds man. Be safe :-)

I'll be safe!

Ouch!! that must of been painful

I'm glad the head wound didn't attract any sharks! My little ones always seem way more concerned when I get hurt than when they are! Way to stay calm and collected. I'm such a worrier than I sometimes way overreact and may have made hem freak out unnecessarily!

Whereabouts are you? I have some old stomping grounds near Corpus Christi, but I much more enjoy the South Padre area.

Weslaco at the moment. Port Isabelle then.

  ·  7 years ago (edited)

Don't stay in Port Isabel! LOL.

Well, you are going to cross the causeway over to South Padre, right? There's good dolphin watching that you can do, but I used to go to the state beach or national park beach or whatever a lot. So for a cheap trip, buy a pound or two of frozen shrimp at a bait store. Now find some seagulls to feed and film the result. You can get them to eat out of your hand or hat or whatever. If you've got about a $100 or so, you can go "porpoise" or bottle-nosed dolphin wathing. That's super fun. Take your camera and some shrimp there, too.

The sand dunes at South Padre Island are pretty neat. You can drive out there, you know. Watch for snakes... the two legged kind.

Set your GPS for 26.165° N, 97.173° W, and tell me how it comes out!! The dolphin watching is around
26.077° N, 97.165° W (south side of town)

Can't let that head ruin your fun. Now if you had the dreads you may have had some padding.

I still miss them.

Good education for the little-peppers. Nicely done. I wonder what the schooling system would say?

"Call 999 (911?) get to hospital wait three hours, have some big pharma drugs, get prodded, take all you details, record the incident, leave with some good pharma drugs"

Haha I know which I'd would prefer

Lol, indeed.

Sorry about your head wound and that the little peppers had to see it. But glad you stayed calm in front of the children and that they were able to help you.

Great post man! It is so important to stay calm during something like that. Stay safe out there!

Oh my goodness that branch got you good, ouch. :(

So glad you were okay after a few minutes of self-first aid and that you could continue with the fun day you had planned with your little peppers. :D

Great pictures and videos. Watch out for sharp branches and stay safe...none of us want you decommissioned for the sake of a great post or video, we'd really rather have you around.

You keep things interesting and entertaining, both great for learning something new. :D

Take care and God bless. :D

damn glad your ok wild man

I was quite concerned when I read about the head gash earlier. Thanks for the follow-up post (this one) explaining things.

It seems you are very good at analyzing things and making good choices. My parents taught me that salt water is a great natural sanitizer. The fact that you could submerge the wound in water without the gash re-opening suggests to me that the wound was not one that required stitches and a visit to the hospital is unnecessary (I avoid hospitals as much as possible).

It is quite fitting that you run a survival game. You really are a survivor and have many skills that can help you survive on your own.

I'm very happy to hear that it all ended well (at least as well as it can be) and hope the wound heals up quickly.

I somehow came across one of your very early posts via a Google search and I want to say that I am very impressed by what I see from then and from today. You really are an exemplary example of an ideal Steemian and someone I admire. This is not being stated to butter you up; if it were not true, I would not be able to post it. I really mean it and can see why you have such a huge following. Not too long ago, you asked the question about what people thought of you and at that time I knew very little about you as a person. Since then I have learned quite a bit more and I'm very impressed. Although I'm quite a bit older than you are, I feel as though I can learn a lot by watching you. Thanks for sharing your life and adventures with us.

Wow, now that is a comment. Thanks for your honest sharing there, and I'm glad that you enjoy what I've been up to.

I'm glad you liked it. Often, I can be brutally honest and it may not be taken well, however I rarely say things with a deliberate intention of hurting anyone (and I usually regret it after on the rare occasions I do). Very few of us are perfect and sometimes we need others to point out our flaws in order for us to grow. The better method, however, is to lead by example and you seem to do that very well.

Omg! I hope you recover fast. You are not just an interesting person but also a wonderful father!! Children learn by their parents' example... and you are definitely setting the right one. They'll always remember this day! Take care, @papa-pepper!

Ouch! I hope you're feeling better! I've done that before on the car trunk when I was taking something out. That really smarts.

@papa-pepper always a delight to read. So sorry you wounded yourself on your way to catch fun. However, I think children learn better when we do what we teach them. Do not be disappointed tomorrow when they do as you did. Nice post as usual.

As always an interesting post. Sorry about that head wound, I know from personal experience that they bleed like hell. I will tell a story one day of an incident that happened to me, very funny with hindsight but not at the time.

Yeah, thankfully I survived! It is not my first either! Thank you.

What a learning experience for the little ones! Glad you stayed calm and they followed suit. It's easy to get antsy when lots of blood is involved.

Once I hitted a friend with my elbow on the head while playing beach volleyball (sorry mate!), and his head started to bleed so bad! So he went to the hospital but it wasn't nothing serious.... It can be impressing but sometimes it's not that bad

A spot of first aid training for the little peppers?

I was expecting to see you mauled by a raccoon or ocelot.

That looked painful

Looks painful. 😞

None of it looked good, but when I got to the picture of the branch with your hair....ouch. Glad you're doing better!

Yeah, I was surprised when I found that later on.

Ouch!!
Glad your ok bud

That looks like quite the scratch there brother! Take care of that thing! Hope it heals quick!!

I am glad you are ok , well be praying for a speedy recovery and no infection! Nice post other wise! Hope you had a good time! Love ya bro.

Ouch...papa-pepper got a bloody head..take care always bro...hope everything is fine!
God Bless bro....

Another solid post @papa-pepper!

Funny how dads are all the same. Don't do what I do, do what I tell you. And when they tell the story your whole scalp would have been lifted off.

or your whole arm ripped open by a shark.
Like when you threw my shark away because we had too many of them huh?

Ouch! Be careful. I sometimes have altercations with the saw palmettos in my Florida back yard in the same way. I just never learn! You got some great shots anyway!

That wound made me seriously cringe.. Hectic stuff! Are you alright now? How is it doing?

For some reason a cartoon comes to mind with a theme song about Watch out for that tree. Don't remember at the moment watch cartoon that was, but it will come to me. Hope your head is feeling better. And watch out for those trees they are killers.

And it just came to me George of the Jungle

It came to me George of the Jungle

Geez! I hope you are feeling better. I'm glad that you can turn things like this into teaching moments.

"Do as I say, not as I do" yeah... when you learn survivalist stuff, that sort of knowledge others may not have, so it is better to just play it safe. In 2016 I learned a ton about wild edible and poisonous mushrooms. A lot of other people were curious, but in the end it boils down to: "Never eat a wild mushroom unless you know exactly what you're doing." And I might be munching down on them, but if other people aren't experienced in identifying them, then they shouldn't be.

That's gotta hurt!

Never let a chance go by to teach those lovely @little-peppers about being safe and dealing with all the fun that life will throw at them.

But try to not get blood on the seats of the car huh? It's murder to get out. ;-)

OMG! @papa-pepper, so is your tetanus shot up-to-date? And, you probably should get on an antibiotic for infection or possible parasites. You can't be too cautious with an injury like that so close to the brain. I think you should have gone to the hospital, but I'm glad you are doing ok. But did you go to the hospital after the outing? You don't want any complications. I hope you feel better.

Congratulations @papa-pepper!

A very interesting adventure )) I hope your head wound has healed? I'm happy to have translated your post into Russian language. https://steemit.com/adventure/@lil4a/papa-pepper-uchit-little-peppers-kak-otnositsya-k-rane-na-golove-trudnyi-put-perevod-stati-ot-papa-pepper

All your adventures and critter catching and it's a tree branch that makes you bleed......sheeshh... be careful out there @papa-pepper!

Nice head wound but your crab is so tiny ;-)

.

I used to look a lot like that.

I've heard of proof-of-work and proof-of-stake.

Proof-of-head-wound ? That's a new one. :) What a day you had. :)

The sea is a good disinfectant. Glad you are alright!

Ouch! I keep telling people the trees will strike back lol... I know what you mean about how your day would have turned out differently if you had gone to the ER...if it was Australia you may still be waiting to be seen! (Not that they don't do a fantastic job with limited resources, but sometimes you go in and you feel like you're never, ever coming out...)
