We have all heard this before – mostly all – left brain controls your right side and right brain the left side. Some of you may have also heard that the left brain is used for logical thinking and right is for creativity. That lead me to use my both side to question – then what’s in the middle? Is there a middle? Has to be, right? If yes what does it control or do, apart from sitting in the middle?
Let me cut the chase and spell it out – Default Mode Network. !! B O O M !!
No joke and no more of the Wi-Fi/ network related blog. That’s what it’s called as per people who studied neuroscience. No, i did not study but my quest to find lead me to it.
Excerpts from WikipideA
“…..The default mode network is most commonly shown to be active when a person is not focused on the outside world and the brain is at wakeful rest, such as during daydreaming and mind-wandering. But it is also active when the individual is thinking about others, thinking about themselves, remembering the past, and planning for the future. The network activates “by default” when a person is not involved in a task.”
Sharp eyes would have noticed a couple of words underlined above. No, that is not how it was designed in WikipideA. Those words I highlighted as it rang some bells – yes in my brain. Reason being ?? That’s where “my” problem lies. It lies in the middle. When you spend time daydreaming, remembering the past and planning for the future you are not in the present. The present is what matters. Enjoy the present. You see humans are designed to overestimate problems and underestimate what they already have. Result. Anxiety. Up front disclaimer, before I proceed: That is not my grey cell telling me that’s my wife.
So my challenge is to keep the middle in reigns, wakeful rest – very important; daydreaming – hell why not. I love it. Mind-wandering .. again .. hell why not. I love it. But .. now I hold the reigns not my past nor my future.
Disclaimer : The photo is from WikiepediA. Thats the “middle” in action. It should be seen horizontal but i pasted it that way as it made more sense from blog page design prespective. 🙂
