G.B. Shaw was an Irish playwright, politician, satirist, music critic and pacifist who received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1925 and the Oscar for the best adapted screenplay in 1939.
Shaw came from a Dublin-based family of Scottish Protestant origin and grew up in problematic family circumstances there. His father George Carr Shaw was an unsuccessful grain merchant who had a drinking problem.
After reading the works of Percy Bysshe Shelley, he became a vegetarian in 1881.
As a representative of intellectual theatre, he created a new type of drama - the discussion drama, whose heroes come together as carriers of certain ideologies. He`s main interest is not in the plot, but the struggle of opinions, the discussions of philosophical, moral, political problems that his heroes face. Shaw often reaches for satirical exaggeration and the grotesque, his heroes are often eccentric.
In 1925 Shaw received the Nobel Prize "for his work, which was supported by both idealism and humanity, in which fresh satire is often combined with a peculiar poetic beauty.

G.B. Shaw war ein irischer Dramatiker, Politiker, Satiriker, Musikkritiker und Pazifist, der 1925 den Nobelpreis für Literatur und 1939 den Oscar für das beste adaptierte Drehbuch erhielt.
Shaw entstammte einer in Dublin ansässigen Familie schottisch-protestantischer Herkunft und wuchs dort in problematischen Familienverhältnissen auf. Sein Vater George Carr Shaw war ein erfolgloser Getreidehändler, der ein Alkoholproblem hatte.
Nach der Lektüre der Werke von Percy Bysshe Shelley wurde er im Jahr 1881 Vegetarier.
Als Vertreter des intellektuellen Theaters schuf er einen neuen Dramentypus – das Diskussionsdrama, dessen Helden als Träger bestimmter Ideologien aufeinandertreffen. Das Hauptinteresse Shaws gilt nicht der Handlung, sondern dem Kampf der Meinungen, den Diskussionen über philosophische, moralische, politische Probleme, die seine Helden führen. Shaw greift oft zu satirischer Überspitzung und Groteske, seine Helden sind nicht selten exzentrisch. 1925 erhielt Shaw den Nobelpreis „für sein sowohl von Idealismus als auch von Humanität getragenes Schaffen, in dem sich frische Satire oft mit einer eigenartigen poetischen Schönheit vereint“.
